THE COST OF REMAINING VISIBLE
It is a heavy thing to realize that your presence in your own community has turned you and your family into a target. Last night our business sign was vandalized again… The first one was physically destroyed and stolen, now its replacement has been shot with a paint gun and damaged less than a week later. A business sign is a massive investment of time and resources. It’s a symbol of our right to be here, and for some, that is a transgression they can't forgive.
I’ve lived at Raven Ridge for 24 years. I have raised my family here, and poured my soul into this land and community. Yet, I am still haunted by a narrative that I didn't write. Such is the small town rumor mill. It’s a weight knowing that when our property is destroyed, there are people, some we’ve never even met, and even some who have eaten at our table that quietly cheer. They’ve been fed stories about us for
years. They remember us for refusing to stay quiet during those years of forced isolation. They remember me for being a nuisance and never giving up the search for my friend, Colleen Smith missing a decade now. When you refuse to be invisible, people build a perspective of you to justify their own hostility. They turn you into a pariah so they don't have to see you as a valued member of the community.
It is exhausting to be the subject of rumors that grow with the telling. It’s heartbreaking to realize that crime is being excused because of whispers and old grudges.
I have filed a report, not because they do anything but because IT IS A CRIME. It certainly doesn't fix the fact that it is safer for someone to shoot our sign with paint than to walk through my gate and have a real conversation with us.
We are working on cleaning up the new sign. But we aren't going anywhere. 24 years on this land has given me roots not easily dug up.
The gate at Raven Ridge is open. It has been for over two decades, and we're still here, still waiting for the peole looking for real conversations, face-to-face. Come check us out.
