Bert Bark

Bert Bark Bert Bark Inn is an eco-inn in the Codroy Valley of southwest Newfoundland, Canada. Come hang out, k You’re invited to Bert Bark Inn.

Whether you'd like to paddle a kayak on the Little Codroy River, behold the gorgeous Table Mountains, watch a film or dance the night away in the Thorni Lounge, stroll through the organic garden, or curl up with a book in our reading nook, we’re confident you’ll feel right at home here. At our eco-inn, you are encouraged to spoil yourself in a sustainable way. You can grab a bike and tour the lush

Codroy Valley, rent a single or tandem kayak and launch it right from the hostel grounds, hike on the renowned Starlite Trail or other nearby trails, sunbathe or swim at Murray’s Beach just steps away from the hostel, or explore other valley sites like the possible Norse settlement at Point Rosee and the beautiful sandy Searston Beach in Codroy Valley Provincial Park. All 15 communities in the Codroy Valley have something to offer. We’re working on several eco-projects for our guests and for the planet that we hope to have these all up and running this summer. These include a geodesic dome greenhouse, solar shower, and bicycle-powered washing machine. Our garden is entirely hand dug and we use only organic practices. You are welcome to gather salad ingredients! The Thorni Lounge is our movie theatre/lounge that we plan to make primarily solar-powered by next year. In the Thorni Lounge we project various films throughout the week including “Foreign Film Friday”, host music events, and welcome guests to sit in our daily morning meditation. At Bert Bark Inn, you’ll have the space to indulge your senses in a breathtaking part of the world, as well as the opportunity to meet other fun-loving travellers and locals in a social setting. With a guest kitchen, six beds, fire pits, barbecue, library, games, book exchange, instruments, communal spaces, and of course the Thorni Lounge, endless possibilities await for fun and games right here at Bert Bark Inn. We provide bedding, bicycles, and breakfast (self-serve) free of charge.

Out in the garden on this fine first of December. With ruby's help, we got some garlic in the soft fudgy ground, some beds mulched and saw that some kale cover crops have come up. With living plants the soil microbes will be happier and healthier. The future in uncertain but at least for one thing and for someone, there will be garlic!!

Cover crop seeds that were sowed by the garlic pulling crowd a couple weeks ago has germinated and doing well. These crops keep the soil covered until they die off in winter and by their photosynthesis, are actively feeling the soil. Great!

Much gratitude to Kass, who started off the day with relaxing yoga, just what the doctor ordered. After that we pulled all the garlic. This was beautiful to see so many people and so much energy in the garden, basking in the garlicky goodness, sweet haul! Thank you to everyone who is involved and here having a good time with us. Good times keep on rollin into the night tonight!

We're having a ball with all these wonderful people! The river run was spectacular as always, supper was great and a fire with friends singing and playing music around the fire ended a fun filled kickoff day to the weekend.

Garlic pulling party at Bert Bark on Saturday at 11am.
We'll be pulling the garlic, planting cover crop seed and then mulching. Come share in the magic of pulling up these gorgeous bulbs. This has been our most rewarding crop and one that we've lovingly nurtured and expanded over the years. Starting with 30 cloves planted in 2017, and none eaten for the first few years, the crop grew to 782 planted in 2022! Celebrate the joy that this beautiful garlic brings to life.
