Family Breakup:
Black bear mothers give birth in January and stay with their cubs for 16-17 months.
Family bonds remain strong right up to the day of family breakup. In the days before family breakup, they play together, groom each other, sleep together, and suckle. Like human youngsters, yearling bears sleep very soundly, trusting their safety to the alertness of their mother.
Family breakup happens suddenly during mating season in May or June when the mother is nearly ready to mate.
The sudden presence of a male can precipitate family breakup. At first, the mother is torn between her yearlings and the persistent male, but within a day after family breakup, she will chase her yearlings away whenever she encounters them.
Littermates also separate from each other. Each settles in a separate area within its mother’s territory. The mother then avoids those areas, giving the yearlings nearly exclusive feeding rights.
Without their mothers, the yearlings are initially skittish, spending long periods up trees. They become covered with ticks. By the end of the summer, they develop into confident little bears.
Most sons voluntarily leave within a couple years after family breakup. Most daughters eventually establish territories in or near their mother’s territory. credit and photo- Dr Lynn Rogers

We will have a more extensive report later this week, but this past weekend was considered a resounding success by everyone who attended. There were VTA members from SSM, Hamilton, Timmins and Schreiber travelling to Wawa to help clear the trails of the Michipicoten Voyageur Club.
A quick bit of reckoning put us at around 200 person hours of walking and chainsaw and lopper work on the trails south of town. We are really grateful for the response from the residents of Wawa, led by the indomitable Shirley Hale. These folks have a true passion for enjoying the trails and connecting with nature. Thank you all for your enthusiasm!
A special thank you to Alex Patterson from the Township of Wawa for help in coordinating the event. And to David, Rupert and all of the crew at Naturally Superior Adventures, thank you for your continued support and partnership with the VTA. You went over and above at making us feel welcome and giving us a place to rest at the end of the day.
And one last thank you to Trans Canada Trail, who provided us with a grant that enabled this work weekend to happen. You continue to be a fantastic partner for trail clubs across the country, and we made sure to educate the residents of Wawa of the benefits of having you as a partner as well.
We are all back home and it is safe to say that everyone slept soundly last night. If you love hiking in some rugged conditions with spectacular views of Lake Superior, we can assure you that Wawa has what you are looking for.

Sending lots of love and light out to our Tele-Tribe south of the ditch today, and holding Bert in our hearts and minds. ❤️
A marvellous man, an honorary Canadian “see it and ski it” best buddy.
Not only a friend to us on the slopes since our baby “steppes”, Bert was also a great music aficionado and when he ran The Livery in Benton Harbor he booked many Canadian musicians, both from my roster and other agencies.
A friend to so many … he brought much love to all his worlds, brew-master, snow-master, music-master, and Im sure there’s more places he will be missed that I don’t know about.
A toast to you today Bert! Thank you for your infectious grin, and enthusiasm for all of it, you will always be remembered!
Next new pitch we find out back will be dedicated in your honour.🥲

The repeal of the ban affects Canada with serious consequences also😭

Thunder Bay, ON — Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Rainy River, Marcus Powlowski, is expressing deep concern and disappointment following the U.S. Senate’s 50-49 vote repealing a ban on copper sulphide mining in northeastern Minnesota, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in the Rainy River watershed.

The decision overturns previous protections put in place by the Biden administration, including cancelled mineral leases and a 20-year mining moratorium intended to safeguard the
watershed.

“This is a troubling decision,” said Powlowski. “The waters in this region do not stop at the border. What happens in Minnesota has very real consequences for communities, ecosystems, and livelihoods here in northwestern Ontario.”

The proposed mining activity sits at the headwaters of the Rainy–Lake of the Woods watershed, a system that flows directly into Canada. Experts and environmental organizations, including the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation, have raised serious concerns about the risk of sulphate pollution and methylmercury contamination; both of which can have devastating long-term impacts on water quality, natural ecosystems, and human health.

“Methylmercury is a potent neurotoxin. We cannot and will not turn a blind eye to the potential for mercury contamination in Canadian waters,” Powlowski said. “Protecting the health of our residents and the integrity of our environment must come first, these waters flow past Lac la Croix First Nation into Rainy Lake, Lake of the Woods, and further into Winnipeg’s river systems.”

Powlowski continued “Additionally, this issue can have potential economic impacts for Northwestern Ontario, as there are many fishing camps in the Rainy–Lake of the Woods watershed area that generate revenue helping to stimulating the local economy.” Studies from advocacy groups like Save the Boundary Waters cite that mining operations in the region are relying on the dilutionary effects of the watershed to allow for sulphate pollution—further mining in the area can increase the sulphates found in the waterways.

Powlowski also emphasized that the decision raises broader concerns about the strength of cross-border environmental protections under the Boundary Waters Treaty, which arguably commits both countries to preventing pollution that harms the other.

“This situation underscores the urgent need for strong bilateral oversight and accountability,” he said. “Canada must be firm in defending our shared waters and ensuring that any development on either side of the border does not come at the expense of our environment or public health.”

Powlowski is calling on the Government of Canada, including Global Affairs Canada, to work closely with their U.S. counterparts and to pursue all available avenues through the International Joint Commission to ensure that Canadian interests are protected.

“This is not just a local issue, it is a national one,” Powlowski added. “We must act now to prevent irreversible damage to one of our most vital and treasured freshwater systems.”

Hard to believe that any of the people who enjoy the wilds of Canada would not be devastated by the decision to overturn the Boundary Waters moratorium on mining. I know we are not supposed to talk politics or religion with our dear clients especially neighbours to the south while on holiday! …but if any of you have feelings about this here are the elected officials who voted pro-mining! If you can express your anger with a letter your Canadian boundary waters partners are with you. We all share this planet, there are no borders when it comes to how to ensure it is a healthy place for the future survival of all life.
