I wrote to our MLA today about the recent cuts to museum funding in Nova Scotia.

When I chose to move to Shelburne and purchase The Cooper’s Inn, it was because I believed in this town - its history, its culture, and the incredible stories that make this place special.

Every year our inn welcomes roughly 1,600 visitors between May and October. For context, that’s nearly the population of Shelburne itself. Many of those visitors come here specifically because of our history - our museums, heritage buildings, and cultural sites.

These organizations aren’t just “nice to have.” They are part of the tourism infrastructure that helps small towns like ours survive.

If you’ve ever taken family to the museums here, recommended them to visitors, or have memories tied to them, you know how important they are to the identity of this community.

I’ve shared the letter I sent to our MLA here because I believe this conversation matters for the future of Shelburne and rural tourism.

If you keep driving past the usual stops, you'll find places like this. Less traffic, fewer crowds, more room to settle into the local rhythm. You'll find old seaside towns with charming homes and families that have lived here for generations. They'll show you how life isn't about the rush, but about soaking it all in. Every sunset, every cup of coffee.

This is Nova Scotia beyond the usual tourist path.

Wow what a year we've had at the inn! More than 1600 of you joined us in Shelburne this year, staying at the inn, supporting our restaurants and artisan shops. You explored our beaches and learned about our diverse history. I cannot describe how much I enjoyed meeting each and every one of you and how grateful I am to get to share this little paradise with you.

Here's to 2026 - may it bring more golden sunsets shared with friends, wine glasses clinking in the garden and moments that help you slow down and enjoy what matters most. We can't wait to welcome old friends and new faces at The Cooper's Inn next year. See you soon in Shelburne! 🌊 ☀️
