🛤️ Staff Spotlight: Mitch Bursey, Signals Supervisor at Universal Rail

As a Signals Supervisor specializing in Signals & Communications (S&C) for the rail industry, Mitch plays a key role in overseeing quality, production, scheduling, and material coordination across major projects. His focus on delivering high-quality work helps ensure that Universal Rail's customers receive a finished product that meets the highest standards. With expertise in the systems that support safe and efficient railway operations, Mitch helps keep projects on track while maintaining a strong commitment to quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

For Mitch, working in the railway industry is more than a career. It’s part of his family heritage. A third-generation railroader, Mitch followed in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, who worked in railway signals. Some of his earliest memories are of spending time around the railway with his father, experiences that sparked an interest in the industry from a young age. Today, he takes great pride in looking back at how far he has come and carrying on a family tradition that spans three generations.

What continues to motivate Mitch is seeing a project come together from start to finish. He enjoys seeing the work his team has completed transform a site, while also having the opportunity to learn about new products, equipment, and technologies as the industry evolves.

Throughout his time with Universal Rail, Mitch’s role has grown significantly. He takes pride in being someone the team can rely on to ensure the work being delivered meets the highest standards. For him, that means continuously learning, finding more efficient ways to work, and ultimately being able to stand alongside his team and show customers what they can accomplish together.

Teamwork is at the heart of what Mitch values most about Universal Rail. He believes success is never the result of one person, but rather everyone working together, relying on one another, and sharing responsibility for the outcome.

Thank you, Mitch, for your dedication, commitment to teamwork, and continued contributions to the success of our projects!

At Universal Rail, we know that safety is more than a workplace responsibility. It's a conversation that starts at home.

As part of a recent rail safety initiative across the North American Rail Solutions family of companies, employees were invited to have their children complete a rail safety colouring sheet. Those drawings were then transformed into puzzles, creating a fun and interactive way for families to spend time together while discussing the importance of rail safety.

A special thank you to our safety superstars and their families for taking part. Your creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment to these conversations help reinforce that safety is not just something we practice on the job. It's a mindset we carry home and share with the people who matter most.

Seeing families come together through this activity was a great reminder that building a strong safety culture extends beyond the job site and into our homes and communities.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Universal Rail joins people across Canada in remembering the children who never returned home from residential schools, honouring Survivors, and recognizing the lasting impacts experienced by families and communities.

The day is also an opportunity to listen, learn and consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation through our actions and relationships.

This year, we are grateful to share perspectives from Deborah Rose, Executive Director of the Edmonton Aboriginal Seniors Centre, and Elder Edward Lavallee, Plains Nehiyaw (Cree) Elder and member of the Centre’s Board.

Our video also shares the story behind Precision, a custom artwork created by Ojibway artist Ken Letander and featured on one of Universal Rail’s tamper. The conversations behind the artwork have been part of our broader journey of learning, relationship-building and increasing Indigenous awareness within our organization.

Across our Canadian offices, employees also received Honey Bee Mix wildflower seeds accompanied by a message encouraging reflection on Truth and Reconciliation—not as a single-day activity, but as something that requires continued learning and action.

At Universal Rail, we know reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility. We remain committed to listening, strengthening respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples and communities, and translating what we learn into meaningful action.
