Fire Rating: Fire Restriction
Effective: May 5, 2026 at 1:00 PM

Smoky Lake County is implementing a Fire Restriction effective 1:00 PM on May 5, 2026. The restriction will remain in effect until further notice.

The Fire Restriction only allows the following:
- Campfires in approved fire pits only. (An approved fire receptacle is a fire pit constructed of non-combustible materials and have with a metal mesh screen.)
- Burning barrels/incinerators that are properly maintained and in good working condition. (Burning barrels must be covered with a metal mesh screen no larger than 6mm (1/4") and positioned at least 100 feet from any structures or standing timber with a non-combustible perimeter of at least 10 feet around the barrel.)
- Use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs) is permitted during this restriction.
- Barbeque with charcoal briquettes, propane/ natural gas BBQ are allowed.

While the restriction remains in effect, no fire permits will be issued for burning brush, bales, garden or yard debris, or unapproved burning pits.

The use of fireworks is strictly prohibited. No burn or fireworks permits will be issued at this time.

Recovery of Firefighting Costs: In accordance with the County’s Fire Protection Services Bylaw, any costs incurred by Smoky Lake County Fire Departments in responding to extinguish fires may be charged to the landowner or permit holder.

Smoky Lake County urges everyone to use extreme caution when working or driving in grassy areas, be mindful of hot exhaust and keep vehicles clean and free of debris as smoldering debris can fall off and start fires.

Be fire smart: remain cautious when burning or having a fire. Ensure the fire is completely extinguished. Soak it, stir it, soak it again. Repeat as necessary. Ashes should be cool to touch.
