We have plenty of good dry snow now with about a foot in the forest and at least 6 inches on area lakes that have 10 inches of clear hard ice without any slush on them. Both snowshoeing and XC skiing guests have marveled at the pristine wilderness on the White Bear Forest trail system ... and there's nobody else on them! Critter sightings have included ruffed grouse (bush chickens), snowshoe hares, red fox, pine marten and countless songbirds, some of which included chickadees, sparrows, blue jays, whiskey jacks and even a pair of bald eagles. Besides the above mentioned animals, other tracks in the snow have included lynx, timber wolves, otter, fisher, ermine, shrews and mice although only tracks have been seen of them. Remember to keep your cell phones or camers close as you never know what might be waiting just around the corner or over the hill and they are just as interested in seeing what is coming through "their turf" as you are in seeing them. And be ready; they won't wait forever for you to take their pics!

Trails are still marked as yellow from Temagami north on the OFSC trail map. Granted, they are not in the great shape that everyone enjoyed all winter but they are decent and I've noticed riders going across the lake every day. The slush is basically all froze up now and shorelines are still solid. It is snowing hard this afternoon so this will only add to the base we have. I have pleanty of accommodations so come on up for another late season ride, excellent meals, a warm bed and lots of free parking for guests.

Trails are now open, the lake pipe markers have been installed and the groomer is out on a regular basis. Lake crossings are good and solid but it would be wise to stay on hard packed trails along the orange markers as there was slush coming up a week ago but it is mostly froze now with a few wet spots still showing. With the covid restrictions slowly being reduced, the lodge is open for business for both meals and accommodations but masks are still required as is the 2 meter distancing between people.

We've had lots of snow over the past couple weeks and trails are beginning to open across the district. The trails around Temagami probably will be open by this weekend as the groomer has been out packing the snow that everybody has been riding on lately. When I see that the orange posts have been installed on the lake in front of the lodge, I will post that in here also.

04/11/2022

Trails are still officially closed but we have good snow for riding on now. The orange trail lake markers should be going out soon. There's at least a foot in the bush and 6 inches or more on area lakes that have up to 10 inches of clear hard ice without any slush anywhere. Cold weather is predicted for the next week or more so ice will only get better. Reservations for the upcoming winter are coming in so call me as soon as you have your vacation dates picked out so you can enjoy another great vacation here at the lodge with all-you-can-eat meals, free trailer parking as well as free pick-ups if you experience any problems on the trails. I'm looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you again in the new year.

Like most of Ontario, we have had an exceptionally warm fall this year and winter is just arriving now. On this past Thursday, we got our first real snowfall of 5 to 6 inches. When we went to bed on Friday night, the bay was still completely free of ice but come Saturday morning, it was solid ice from shore to shore. An overnight temperature of -19 C might have had something to do with that. It's still a long ways from sledding but at least winter has started. Watch this site for further updates all winter.

Season is now closed for most lakes and species but it is open all year for whitefish and stocked lakes of lake trout, rainbow trout , speckle trout and splake. It has been a wonderful winter for whitefish just meters in front of the lodge. And there's lots of other lakes to choose from in the Temagami area. OFSC trails are still open (marked yellow) so there's lots of snow to ride on and if you're going fishing in a nearby lake, permits aren't required anyways. Shorelines are still solid and cars/trucks are still driving on the lakes. Meals and accommodations are still available here at the lodge. See you soon.

Over the past 2 weeks, the lake has gone from no slush anywhere to hardly any dry snow to be found and now it is back to no slush again mainly due to extremely cold weather both days and nights. Temperatures have been all below -30 C at night with very few days above -15. I had my trail drag behind my sled while helping a friend move building material to his cottage and I got stuck in slush that was so deep, it was over my boots when I got off the machine. After a half hour of getting nowhere, we decided to drop the drag, lift it up onto dryer snow and come back the next day for it. It was a relief to get out of there and go home to dry socks after a hot shower. Using the same track trail the next day, we did manage to get the drag back home after a few slight mishaps. Now, you can go anywhere again without breaking through the top crust. As for fishing, not much has changed. One day, they are on and the next day, there's not a fish to be found. Success rates can best be described as sporadic. I've talked to other fishermen and they say it is the same on other Temagami area lakes, Lake Nippissing in North Bay and even as far south as Lake Simcoe in Barrie. My guests are quite happy with the weights but wish the total numbers were better.

Fishing was slow from the time our first guests wet their lines but it has picked up significantly over the past week. As expected, whitefish were the main fish caught in the bay in front of the lodge but there have been a few nice walleye brought in and about a 7 or 8 pound lake trout had to be released this past weekend. She says that she's coming back for it again after the season opens on Feb. 15 because it's got her name on it. Other stocked lakes for both rainbow and lakers have been producing well also. Ice thickness is up to 18 inches in most places now and I have not heard any reports of slush on this lake. However, there is already quite a high pressure crack on the north arm of Lake Temagami.

Well, we've finally got lots of good safe ice to travel on and fish on now. Thickness can vary so it doesn't hurt to check it often if you are on unfamiliar ice or if nobody else is out on it. Here in the bay in front of the lodge, it varies from 8 to 10 inches now and it is all solid clear ice. Snow depths can vary but there's about 6 inches everywhere on it also. So far, there isn't any slush anywhere. I've had a few guests trying their luck but it has been poor (on a good day) to terrible. Everybody is asking the same question: where's the whitefish because this bay is full of them? Hopefully, things will turn around in the new year and we'll be back to limit catches soon.

04/11/2022

It's been a late and unusually warm fall this year and I just took the last boat out of the water earlier this past week. 2 nights ago, the lake finally froze over from shore to shore. It will be a while before we have safe ice to walk on but watch this site for updates as they happen.

There's still lots of birds out there according to my hunting guests. Thursday's snowfall of 5 or 6 inches makes it easy to track them now and their dark bodies show up quite well against the snow. You'll probably need 4-wheel drive on some of the hills and there's not enough snow to stop ATVs so if you want to work your bird dog for a few more bush chickens to put in the freezer, come on up.
