Because they never enter true hibernation, these animals must keep moving all winter to survive, using brush piles, logs, and sheltered corners near homes.

Their cold-season foraging quietly reduces pests, proving winter wildlife is still working the night shift.

Effective immediately, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Watch.

πŸ’§10 mm of freezing rain and 10-25 mm of rain received over last three days
πŸ’§Saturated and frozen ground, potential high runoff
πŸ’§Water levels expected to rise quickly due to heavy rain and snowmelt

Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, and cold, swift-moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.

This message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. on December 30th, 2025, unless otherwise updated.

Hi. Garter snake here. The one in your garden.

Last spring you almost killed me with a shovel. You screamed. Raised it.

Then stopped. Backed away. Let me live.

**Thank you. Here's what I did:**

βœ… Ate 200 mice (the ones chewing wires in your garage)
βœ… Ate 50 slugs (your hosta's worst enemy)
βœ… Ate snails, insects, small rodents
βœ… Scared away bigger snakes (I'm territorial, keep others out)

**My hunting grounds:**

Your compost pile (mice LOVE it, I patrol it)
Your flower beds (slug central, I clean it)
Your garage (mice highways, I eliminate them)

**I'm not dangerous:**

βœ… Non-venomous (completely harmless)
βœ… Don't bite unless grabbed (you don't grab me)
βœ… Eat pests, not pets (your cat is safe)
βœ… Shy (I hide when you approach)

**Your rodent situation:**

Neighbor (killed their snake): $300 exterminator, traps everywhere, mice still there

You (let me live): Zero mice, zero traps, zero cost

**What you did right:**

βœ… Didn't kill me (overcame fear, chose coexistence)
βœ… Left brush pile (I sun there, hunt from there)
βœ… Told kids "snakes are helpful" (education matters)

I'm not scary. I'm your free rodent control.

- Garter Snake (the one who remembers you spared me)

Skunks rely on an exceptionally strong sense of smell to locate underground nests. They dig with purpose, targeting rats, mice, and the larvae and adults of hornets and wasps.

What looks like damage is often natural pest control in action.
