RAPID is kind of like Buckley’s. It’s awful, but it works 😅

Truthfully, it’s usually not as bad as people expect, but you do need to feel it working. Interestingly, most people are actually grateful that we were able to get into the source of their pain.

Watching a macrophage repair a damaged blood vessel is honestly mind blowing.

A tiny immune cell sensing damage, migrating with purpose, cleaning debris, coordinating repair, communicating with surrounding tissues…all without us consciously doing a thing.

As therapists, I think we sometimes forget how unbelievably intelligent the human body already is. We love to talk about techniques, protocols, tools, and interventions, more and more, but healing isn’t something we “do” to people. The body does the healing.

What we can do is provide an input. We can change nociception, reduce threat, improve movement, alter loading, influence circulation, create sensory change, and maybe help create a better environment for the body to do what it’s already trying to do.

But the real magic?
That belongs to the immune system, the nervous system, and the incredible repair processes happening every second beneath the surface.

The more we learn, the more humbled we become by the intelligence of human physiology.

The body is not weak.
It is constantly adapting, defending, repairing, and trying to survive.

And honestly…macrophages are little badass miracle workers. 🧠⚡️

One of the hardest things about chronic pain in kids is that everyone starts looking for the one thing to blame.

The tissue
The posture
The screen time
The nervous system
The parents

But humans are messier than that.

A recent systematic review looked at parent mental health and pediatric chronic pain. Parents of kids with chronic pain had higher rates of anxiety, depression, and general distress. Worse parent mental health was also associated with worse pain and function in the child.

That does NOT mean parents are causing the pain.

It means nervous systems do not exist in isolation.

Kids absorb stress. They absorb fear. They absorb uncertainty. They absorb safety too.

A child living in persistent pain can absolutely increase anxiety and distress in a parent. And a stressed, overwhelmed family environment can amplify threat and sensitization in a child. Both things can be true at the same time.

This is why the biopsychosocial model matters when it is used properly.

Not as a way to dismiss pain
Not as “it’s all in your head”
Not as blame

But as recognition that pain is shaped by biology, environment, relationships, stress, safety, sleep, fear, immune activity, past experiences, and the meaning the brain gives to sensory input.

The nervous system is not a machine part floating in space. It lives inside a human. Humans live inside families.

Honestly, I think this is one of the biggest shifts healthcare still struggles with. We are very comfortable treating body parts. We are much less comfortable treating context.

And context matters.

We say this in every class: if there’s little to no progress after months with the same therapist, even a RAPID therapist, it may be time for a different approach. 💭

The goal is to get better and keep moving forward.

Is it sacroiliac dysfunction or piriformis syndrome?

Honestly…does it even matter that much? 🤷‍♀️

If you treat the nervous system and calm the body down neurologically, the body often responds the same way. Pain decreases. Movement improves. People feel like themselves again.

Most clients are not showing up because they desperately want a perfect diagnosis. They’re showing up because they want hope. They want to sit, walk, sleep, work, play with their kids, go to the gym, and live without constantly thinking about pain.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of clinicians got stuck trying to figure out exactly what is “wrong” instead of spending enough time actually helping the person in front of them feel better.

Listen to your client. Treat what you find. Look for change.

Your client doesn’t care if you used the perfect orthopedic label.
They care that they can get back to life.
