Carlyle ( Carlisle) Street was named after Bishop Carlisle of the Anglican Church. Archdeacon Dobson of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church ,established in 1844 in Tilbury suggested the name.
Our home was built in 1895 for James and Ellen Powell. Mr. Powell was manger of the General Store and left as manager to open a successful dry-goods and grocery store with his brother George. The business employed 15 people, including dressmakers and milliners. Mr Powell was reeve of Tilbury from 1892-1894 and passed away in 1932 at the age of 81.
There were two owners between 1904 and 1919 but I was unable to find any information on them. In 1919 William A. Shaw purchased the home. He was founder and publisher of the Tilbury Times for over fifty years. The Times is still published as a weekly newspaper.
Other names on the title papers are Myrtle M. Marshall, Levi B. Marshall, John A. Magee and Thomas L. Patton. Louis L. Odette and his wife Emma owned the home for a time but I do not have exact dates. Louis along with his brother Edmond owned the Canadian Top and Body Corporation. The Odette Library in Tilbury and the Odette Sculpture Gardens in Windsor , Ontario are parts of the legacy of the Odette family. Other owners are mentioned were William M. Scharp and Mabel M. Scharp, Annette and Edwin Schramek, Nelles C. Anderson, Alexander and Fani Koufes, Peter and Beverly Hambly in the title. We purchased the home from Allan and Agnes Davidson in 1998 who purchased the home in 1986.
