We are always struck by how quickly a mist-laden Chesterman Beach can give way to blue skies and sunshine this time of year ☀️

While many might assume that Charles, our Maître de Maison, grew up on Chesterman Beach, his childhood home was actually the first and only house at the end of the road to Tonquin Beach. From there, the family cabin came to life, bringing with it a vision for the Inn.

"During my younger years, the approach of summer was known to bring an influx of friends and extended family eager to experience our remote coastal haven in Tofino. My mother, Lynn, warmly welcomed the lively atmosphere that enveloped our home and would fondly say she operated the busiest complimentary bed and breakfast on the West Coast, all while wrangling three rambunctious boys. Our mother was an incredible host and an equally talented cook and baker, and delicious treats would often grace the kitchen counters, much to our delight and that of our visiting friends and family.

Following the sale of our home on Tonquin Beach, the first edition of our family cabin was built and accessed only by a trail at the end of Chesterman Beach or by boat from town and was very much what one would consider off-grid living. There were no separate bedrooms, just a bathroom and a living room where we would all sleep. Propane, supplied from town via our 12-foot aluminum boat, would run the on-demand water heater, stove, fridge, and lights. While this might have caused the average person to question opening up the cabin to house guests, we still welcomed family visits regularly.

During these languid summer eves, a crab cookout on the beach would be in order, with the vast ocean as our backdrop, perhaps with some steamed little neck clams sourced from the clam bed just below the cabin, and of course, some agreeable wine to go with it all.

Today, the Wickaninnish Inn still carries this spirit of hospitality embodied by my mother. While many decades have passed since those early days at our cabin, the excitement of inviting guests to create their own West Coast memories remains the same." ~Charles McDiarmid

Last weekend, The Pointe Restaurant had the pleasure of being one of this year's presenters at Tofino Wine & Dine.

Tofino Wine & Dine is an annual 2-day outdoor festival that overlooks tinwis (formerly Mackenzie Beach). With seemingly endless food and drink options to try from industry presenters from across the West Coast, it is an amazing event for all foodies, whether local or visiting from afar.

On Saturday, Executive Chef Clayton presented a Qualicum Farmhouse Cheddar Tart with Huckleberry & Spruce. This was served alongside glasses of Blue Mountain Brut - Wickaninnish Inn 30th Anniversary Edition, poured by Ike, Sommelier and Director of Food & Beverage.

On Sunday, Senior Bartender James presented his cocktail “Rhu the Rain.” With expertly balanced sweet, tart, and crisp notes, the vibrant red cocktail featured rhubharb, spruce, Sheringham Distillery Raincoast Gin, and Merridale Cidery & Distillery Raspberry Liqueur.

Happy 🌊

Today, we reflect on all the reasons we are grateful to be on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

We are grateful for the thunderous crashing of the surf in winter and the way it swallows sunsets whole come summer time.

We are grateful to have the Pacific Ocean not as a backdrop, but as our centrepiece - our reason for existing on the wild West Coast.

Just as much as this Ocean protects us, providing us with food and oxygen and temperate weather, it is crucial we protect it as well.

Whether it's picking up a piece of plastic left on the shoreline, joining one of Tofino's weekly beach cleans during July and August hosted by , or leaving shells and intertidal creatures where you find them, there are many small ways to contribute to the protection of the Pacific Ocean during your next visit to the West Coast.

Meet Ike Seaman, our Director of Food & Beverage and Sommelier at The Pointe Restaurant. 🥂

Ike’s journey to the "Wick" is as unique as our location. After growing up in his family’s fish and chip shop in Nova Scotia, Ike traded cold Atlantic winters for the surf of Tofino in the 90s, eventually watching the Inn take shape from the water.

Whether he is curating our wine list to favour independent, family-owned wineries or fostering an atmosphere where guests feel completely at ease, Ike’s goal is simple: to offer something meaningful without making it complicated.
