Less is certainly more when it comes to the weight of a sleeping system for hiking adventures, and ever-improving materials along with good ol' fashioned human ingenuity keep opening up new ways to lighten the load. At just over two pounds, the Mantis UL all-in-one hammock tent is certainly at the.....

Yet another great innovation from Ge**er.

So much of the time and space spent on packing for camping or backpacking are dedicated to food and cooking, so it can really pay to streamline things with culinary multi-tools. Ge**er makes it easier with two small, ultralight utensils that package a full array of food prep, cooking and eating…

I like this. I already wrap my gear in bright tape and sew bright patches on fabric that is going to blend into the background. I hate all this outdoor camping stuff that is in camo. Stuff like that is just begging to be left behind. Want proof? Whenever you go into a backwoods campsite, 10 to 1 you are going to find something green or brown that has been left behind. You should see my collection of green bungy cords!

I'm glad they enjoyed their trip. Too bad about the canoe.

Two German tourists walked about 115 kilometres through the bush in northern Manitoba with minimal food after crashing their canoe in rapids on the Hayes River.

I have a 16' Prospector. She is all beat to hell, but will be restored this summer.

One of the great joys of wilderness camping is the night sky. Particularly late in the season season, on those crystal clear chilly evenings, the stars are so bright it feels like they are close enough to touch.

And something that can add to your experience is having a star chart with you. I have carried one for years. They are small, light, simple devices and they can travel in your map case.

Whether you're sky watching with just your eyes, with binoculars, or with a telescope, a planisphere star chart is an essential tool y...

Another article about Mike's trip.

Mike Ranta has seen more of the Canadian wilderness than perhaps anyone else. With his dog Spitzii at his side, Ranta successfully canoed from Vancouver to Dominion Beach, Cape Breton in just 200 days as his way of showing appreciation for military veterans. “We’ve got a beautiful nation,” said Rant...
