Seasons passed but oh, so loved. Lilacs first, then the locust trees so full of blooms that you can hear the buzz of the bees from a distance, and then the peonies emerge. I have inherited an amazing garden thanks to the previous gardener. I thank her often and am hoping to maintain it and add to it. Last fall I added sedum, and many bulbs, most of which I did not know what flower would emerge. They ended up being tulips, daffodils, hyacinth and giant allium . They were harvested in a frenzy, with the help of friends, when I was preparing to leave my former property.
I am also learning how to press flowers.

One of my big projects is improving the insulation in the attics, crawlspace and basement of this old home. I’ve become a fan of rock wool, inert, easily put in and removed and has been used for ages. These shots are the before ones. The crawl space may get enclosed to create a barrier from moisture. But there isn’t a lot of space to work there!
You have to be careful you don’t mess with a system that has worked since 1850. Thus why I am not insulating the walls till I’ve learned more about how the walls are constructed.
I burned a heck of a lot of wood last winter, my first winter in this home. My objective is to make Fairview more energy efficient and comfortable, and me not a slave to the two fireplaces.

I’ve screened in the porch and it has become the most used room this summer. Sitting here we have hummingbirds visit the feeder, a house wren raising her babies, the garden in front unfolding, and, if we are lucky, a deer lying in the grass across from the driveway. This porch is teaching me to just watch and listen.

Pruning the lilacs. To get more airflow and remove dead wood and create some shape. The scent here in the spring is amazing with the lilacs. And by the garden in the back there is a different variety that bloom later.

Currently researching heat pumps, rock wool insulation and ductwork. Though not pretty they will be essential in making this home more energy efficient. So posting pics of pretty things to balance for the work.

Lilacs inside and outside right now. Putting them in the front foyer let’s the scent permeate up the stairs and down the hall so you smell them before you see them.
Getting quotes on improving the insulation. I’m learning lots about being respectful of the way this house was built in 1850. Some modern approaches don’t work in a house of this age.
