A new place to pause, learn, and reflect in Ucluelet.
The Ucluelet Japanese Canadian History Pavilion now overlooks the harbour where one of British Columbia’s most significant Japanese Canadian fishing communities once flourished. In the 1930s, Japanese Canadian families made up half of Ucluelet’s population, living and working alongside Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ families and European settlers. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, nearly 22,000 Japanese Canadians were forcibly removed from BC’s coast, and almost half of Ucluelet’s community disappeared.
The pavilion helps preserve and share this important part of Ucluelet’s history, creating a space to learn about the people and stories that helped shape this community.
