⚠️Public Wildlife Safety Announcement!

There have been a spike in wolf reports throughout the PacRim region including Tofino and Ucluelet. These wolves have learned through countless interactions to be comfortable approaching people and their dogs.

Take preventative measures. Please keep dogs on leash on every dog walk. We do not want your dog to be killed or a wolf to be destroyed.

- Use the Frank Jones Memorial Park fence enclosure
- Walk in pairs or groups
- Walk during the day

How to respond. If you encounter a wolf, for yours and their safety, please respond appropriately.

- Form a group - keep dogs and others close
- Get big - stand tall, be big and keep facing it (don’t crouch or turn away)
- Be assertive - use a loud voice and horn
- Slowly back away
- Have bear spray ready - alternatively throw sticks or rocks

If a wolf approaches you or others, DETER IT. Control the situation, stop habituation.

🐺 Dog Prohibition on Wickaninnish Beach Begins February 11 at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Parks Canada

Since 2024, the Long Beach Unit has seen a rise in human–wolf interactions, including wolves:
• approaching dogs at close range
• pursuing dogs over long distances
• displaying bold or indifferent behaviour toward people

Because wolves often see dogs as competitors or prey, this can lead to aggressive behaviour.

To reduce these risks, dogs will be prohibited on Wickaninnish Beach from Beach Access E to Sandhill Creek starting February 11.

Wolves range widely and encounters can occur anywhere in the region. A wolf warning remains in effect across the entire Long Beach Unit, along with several area closures.

🚫 Non-compliance with closures, dog bans, or leash laws may result in charges under the Canada National Parks Act (penalties up to $25,000). Approaching or disturbing wildlife is also prohibited.

⚠️Increased Human-Wolf Interactions in the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve⚠️

The Wolf in Area Warning remains in effect for the entire Long Beach Unit: https://ow.ly/pZq350Xjjx6

Two recent interactions between wolves and visitors show an increasing level of habituation and bold behavior from wolves. One interaction indicates that the wolves have increased their boldness in attempt to prey on dogs, including large, leashed dogs.

In one encounter, two wolves charged near a visitor with a leashed dog and pursued them at very close proximity for an extended period. The second interaction included two wolves quickly approaching a beach walker at very close proximity and pushing the visitor into the water.

Protecting wildlife is a shared responsibility, and visitors and locals have an important role to play.

In response to these interactions, Parks Canada is asking visitors and locals to:
• Leave your dog at home. Dogs are an attractant to wolves.
• Keep children close.
• Carry bear spray, ensure it is accessible, and know how to use it.
• Avoid hiking alone and in areas with no human activity.
• Stay alert and watch for signs such as tracks and droppings.
• Respect all warnings, closures, and restrictions.

If you see a wolf:
• DO NOT RUN and do not crouch down. Create space by backing away slowly while maintaining eye contact with the animal.
• Pick up small children and keep the group together.
• Yell, wave your arms and look large; if you have one, use an air horn.
• Remove your bear spray from its holster and be prepared to use it.
• If a wolf approaches you: Throw sticks and stones. If the aggression escalates, use bear spray and fight back.

Visitors should report all wolf sightings immediately to Parks Canada Emergency Dispatch (1-877-852-3100 or 250-726-3604).

Now that the fire ban has lifted, you may notice Parks Canada staff burning small piles of invasive grasses on the beach at Wickaninnish Dunes and Schooner Dunes.

This is the last step in our annual maintenance of restored dune ecosystems in our efforts to keep these sensitive areas free of introduced Ammophila species (Ammophila arenaria and Ammophila breviligulata) and ensuring continued habitat for Species at Risk such as the Endangered Pink Sand-Verbena (Abronia umbellata) and the Threatened Silky Beach Pea (Lathyrus littoralis).
