Buckin Around BC is heartbroken to share that one of our own, Hugh, was tragically taken from us.
Hugh was there from the very beginning—part of building this from the ground up. He was our pick-up man for Mulvahill Rodeo, a director and judge for Buckin Around BC, and one of our closest friends. But more than that, he was a husband, a father, a brother, and a son.
Hugh wasn’t a soft man—he was full of grit and try. He lived by the mindset of “nobody cares, try harder.” He didn’t look for sympathy or recognition. He believed in showing up, working hard, and being a good person. That’s exactly what he did, every single day. And alongside Shelly, he raised his boys with those same values.
To honour Hugh and the legacy he leaves behind, together with the Loring family, we are proud to introduce a new annual award.
The Hugh Loring “Try A Little Harder Award” will be given each year to an individual who truly represents who Hugh was.
This award stands for grit and try.
For honesty and kindness.
For the kind of person who works hard and helps others—not for recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Someone who doesn’t seek attention.
Someone who just shows up and does the work.
That was Hugh. And that’s the standard this award will carry forward.
We will miss him more than words can say, but his impact will live on—in this association, in this industry, and in the people who knew him.
