Wakaw Lake Update: Water Conditions and Public Health Information

The RM of Hoodoo was in contact with Sask Public Health on July 21 regarding concerns about potential algae bloom & reports of dead fish at Wakaw Lake. At this time, the RM has not been advised of any confirmed harmful algae blooms at the tested locations on Wakaw Lake

On July 21, Saskatchewan Public Health conducted site visits and tested for algae blooms at three locations on Wakaw Lake: Regional Park Beach, Poplar Beach, and Hoodoo Beach. No algae blooms were identified at these locations. However, these results do not confirm the absence of algae blooms throughout the entire lake, as conditions can vary between different areas.

Saskatchewan Public Health has advised that residents with concerns may contact them directly at 306-232-9645. Based on the information provided, they will assess whether additional investigation or testing may be warranted. Please note that response times may be delayed, and it could take 24 to 48 hours to receive a reply.

Regarding reports of dead fish, they advised the following:

Fish kills can occur naturally and are relatively common in Saskatchewan lakes.
The presence of dead fish does not automatically indicate a harmful algae bloom.
Further assessment is required before determining if there is any connection between fish mortality and algae.
Residents can monitor current beach information through Saskatchewan’s Healthy Beaches Program website:

We encourage anyone with concerns to contact the RM office or Saskatchewan Public Health directly. If possible, please take photographs of any water conditions, algae, or fish mortality concerns and note the location. This information can assist Public Health in their assessment.

The program ensures safe water quality levels at monitored recreational beaches. Find current water sampling results for select public recreational beaches.

Thank you to those who were able to attend the Water Security Agency (WSA) Aquatic Habitat Protection presentation held on Friday, June 26, at the Wakaw Legion Hall. We appreciate your interest and participation. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ben Wilson from the Water Security Agency for taking the time to attend and deliver an informative and valuable presentation. We would also like to remind people of the Love Your Lake program, funded by Watersheds Canada in 2016. Each property on Wakaw Lake had an individual report done for their lakefront assessment. To obtain a copy of that report, property owners can send an email to [email protected] or visit their website - Home | Love Your Lake. Staff there will be happy to get property owners the survey code so they can access their report.

Another helpful resource for waterfront property information is Living By Water | Working towards healthier human and wildlife habitat which promotes healthier human and wildlife habitats along shorelines.

If you have any questions after reviewing the materials, please do not hesitate to contact the RM office or Water Security Agency.

You may proceed with your activity in accordance with the eligibility requirements (Section 2) and the conditions (Section 3) of the EPP (see links below) once you submit a completed notification form and pre-construction photos of your worksite.

From the RM of Hoodoo

FIRE BAN REMOVED
Recent moisture levels have allowed for the removal of the fire ban. Residents are still encouraged to follow safe burning practices at all times:
- Use a screen on your firepit
- Fully extinguish fires before leaving them unattended or overnight
- For planned controlled burns, call the Controlled Burn Line at 1-866-404-4911
- Keep an adequate water supply nearby

ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
1. Highway 2 Construction
The Ministry of Highways will begin roadwork on Highway 2 starting May 19, from just north of the Hwy 2 & 312 intersection to the Hwy 2 & Ens Well Road intersection (approximately 6 km).
• Expected completion: June 15
• Traffic: The highway will remain open but may be reduced to single-lane traffic at times
• Please plan for minor delays and allow extra travel time

2. First Point Road
Construction work is expected to begin shortly.
• Detour information will be circulated prior to construction starting

BYLAW ENFORCEMENT
Weekly bylaw enforcement patrols have resumed. The RM of Hoodoo has contracted Bylaw Assist again to provide enforcement services this season.
• To report a concern, please contact the RM office by phone or email
• All complaints will be forwarded to the bylaw officer for follow-up
• Please comply with any notices issued
• If you have questions or concerns, contact the RM office directly
Residents are reminded to be respectful when interacting with the bylaw officer. Their goal is to work cooperatively and achieve reasonable resolutions.

WEEKLY GARBAGE PICKUP
A reminder that garbage is now picked up weekly on Monday’s; if Monday falls on a holiday it will be picked up Tuesday. Next pickup will be Tuesday, May 19th.
A few reminders for garbage pickup:
• Regular household garbage only is accepted and in a REGULAR garbage bag (75L Bags 65.1 cm X 82.5 cm or 25.62“ X 32.5”, not small plastic/grocery bags or the very large leaf bags) and no heavier than 40 lbs. Nothing loose.

• Please DO NOT put fish guts, wire, broken glass, nails, or construction materials in garbage bags. If your garbage is refused for one of these reasons you will be responsible to take it to REACT at the landfill or transfer station.

• Remember, this is for household garbage only. Any renovation/construction materials, old furniture, or garden refuse can be taken to either the React Hoodoo Dump located 4 1/2 miles south of Poplar Beach or to the Wakaw Transfer Station.

A fire ban is now in effect for the RM of Hoodoo as of May 11, 2026, at 4:15 PM. The following areas are also under this ban: Town of Cudworth, Town of Wakaw, Wakaw Lake Regional Park, Resort Village of Wakaw Lake, and RM of Fish Creek.
All open fires, including small firepits, burning of stubble, and brush piles, are strictly prohibited.
Allowed with caution: BBQs, propane heaters, and propane fire rings with lava or glass rocks. Please use extreme care when operating these, ensuring you have a pail of water or fire extinguisher close by.
If you spot a fire, call 911 immediately. The fire department will be dispatched, and there is a minimum call-out charge of $1,000 to the property owner.
This fire ban remains in effect until further notice and will be re-evaluated weekly.
