That in between season is almost here 🌿🏔️

As winter starts to ease and spring slowly takes hold, Waterton enters one of its most underrated times of year, shoulder season. Fewer crowds, quieter trails, and a chance to experience the park at a slower pace.

You might still catch snow on the peaks, shifting weather, and those peaceful moments where it feels like you have the whole place to yourself.

Thank you to for capturing this beautiful transition in Waterton.

If you are looking for a more relaxed way to explore the mountains, this is your time 🤍

Let’s celebrate Parks Canada’s commitment to conservation by talking about the long-toed salamander - a very important part of Waterton’s ecology.

Over the past two decades, staff and volunteers have worked diligently to install fencing and tunnels so that salamanders can safely cross under the entrance road. These efforts have been wildly successful. The salamanders are thriving! Although, their size has increased to the point of concern.

We understand that this may be concerning for some visitors. Please remember we share this landscape with all kinds of wildlife who call this special place home.

Parks Canada is now asking visitors to be extra careful if approached by giant long-toed salamanders. They may become aggressive if they feel threatened, so give them the space they deserve. Don’t leave food unattended at any time. If a salamander approaches, pick up children and small pets. Carry reptile/bear spray and know how to use it.

March 31 is the National Day of Indigenous Languages. Today is to celebrate and honour all known and practiced Indigenous languages in Canada and beyond.

Niitsipowahsin (nee-tsee-BOH-sin) refers to the Blackfoot language, which plays a respected and honoured role in our work here in PaahtĂłmahksikimi (BUCK-toe-MOCK-sick-ih-mee), the area also known as Waterton Lakes National Park.

Blackfoot is a rich and complex language. The same as translating from another language, there are words in Blackfoot which have no direct translations into English. Many English words are sometimes needed to explain the context and meaning of a single word in Niitsipowahsin.

On your next visit to PaahtĂłmahksikimi, stop by the Oki (OH-ghee) sign to learn the Blackfoot greeting.

An evening with Waterton’s bison herd (captive). It would have been quite the sight to see the huge wild herds that once roamed here with the mountains as a backdrop. Maybe they will again one day.
