There’s a certain feeling you get when you arrive in Waterton.

The mountains rise up in front of you. The air feels cleaner. The noise of everyday life fades away almost instantly, you can feel your shoulders start to drop before you’ve even unpacked your bags.

Our home here faces the some of the oldest mountains in the Rockies. Nothing but nature in front of you. Mornings are slow and quiet. Evenings are for lighting a fire in the stove, watching the flames dance while the sky turns shades of pink and blue. Later, you step outside and the entire Milky Way stretches across the sky — clear, bright, humbling. It reminds you how small your worries really are.

There’s always wildlife wandering through our path, deer, elk, cranes and the occasional surprise visitor. It’s peaceful in a way that’s hard to explain until you experience it. It feels grounding, almost spiritual... an opportunity to hear your own thoughts again.

One of our favorite rituals is sitting in the sauna with the mountain view in front of us — heat on your skin, cool mountain air waiting outside. You walk out feeling lighter, clearer, calmer.

We use this place as a retreat from the business of life. To reset. To reconnect. To slow down on purpose.

And that’s why we’ve chosen to share it.

If you’ve been craving quiet… if you’ve been feeling stretched thin… if you’ve been wanting to truly unplug and breathe deeply again — this might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Waterton has a way of changing your pace and your perspective and forcing you to slow down and be present.

We’d love for you to experience it for yourself. 🌲🔥✨

Come unwind. Come reset. Come fall in love with the mountains and reconnect again with the version of you that gets lost sometimes.

Let’s celebrate Parks Canada’s commitment to conservation by talking about the long-toed salamander - a very important part of Waterton’s ecology.

Over the past two decades, staff and volunteers have worked diligently to install fencing and tunnels so that salamanders can safely cross under the entrance road. These efforts have been wildly successful. The salamanders are thriving! Although, their size has increased to the point of concern.

We understand that this may be concerning for some visitors. Please remember we share this landscape with all kinds of wildlife who call this special place home.

Parks Canada is now asking visitors to be extra careful if approached by giant long-toed salamanders. They may become aggressive if they feel threatened, so give them the space they deserve. Don’t leave food unattended at any time. If a salamander approaches, pick up children and small pets. Carry reptile/bear spray and know how to use it.

Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot) people refer to the month of February as Piitaiki'soom: bald eagles are migrating.

It’s pronounced: BEE-day-gee’soom

This is the time of year when more eagles are seen in the area. Eagle migration routes travel along the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies, but you may find bald eagles in this area all year round.

There are two species of eagles that are seen in Paahtómahksikimi (the area also known as Waterton Lakes National Park), the bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

In Niitsipowahsin (Blackfoot language), bald eagles are also called Piitaiki'soom. Otaikimmio'tokaan are golden eagles, and pronounced OH-day-gim-me-oh-doe-gon.

Many Indigenous cultures regard eagles as sacred. They may symbolize respect, honour, strength, courage, and wisdom. Eagle feathers are used in Siksikaitsitapi ceremonial attire and powwow regalia, including both war bonnets and straight-up headdresses. The straight-up is a uniquely Blackfoot headdress, where the feathers point straight up from the regalia’s rim.

We thank the Piikani and Kainai knowledge keepers for their Niitsipowahsin (Blackfoot language) content. Discover more about Siksikaitsitapi people at the Waterton Lakes Visitor Centre: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/waterton/activ/accueil-visitor
