Once again Hollyburn Heritage Society will be at the West Vancouver Community Cultural Fest at Ambleside Park this coming Friday June 6, 4pm - 9pm and Saturday June 7, 11am - 7pm. Drop by and check us out. We will have a few items for sale including some coffee mugs.

Anna Grant sent us a couple pictures from her hike last week up to Panorama Ridge in Garibaldi Provincial Park. That is a 1500m elevation gain and 26 km trip in a day! Wow!

We're back for another year! Hollyburn Heritage Society will be at the West Vancouver Community Cultural Festival at Ambleside Park this coming Friday May 31, 4 PM - 9 PM and Saturday June 1, 11 AM - 9 PM. Drop by and check us out. We will have some copies of the historic sites walking guide and a few mugs for sale.

Our Annual General Meeting is just a month away and this year we will be back to an in-person meeting. Please join us on Tuesday November 7 in the "Mountain Room" at the West Vancouver Community Centre, meeting starting at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) for an update on the past year and our plans for 2024. We also hope to offer the meeting on-line through Zoom, details will be emailed to members shortly.

An interview of Jack Roocroft by Don Grant and Iola Knight is now available on our Vimeo channel. Jack passed away in January of this year. It was recorded back in 2007 with Iola interviewing and Don in the background. With the generous permission of the Roocroft family, we are now able to publish it. Jack was a very prominent ski jumper on Hollyburn back in the day. He grew up in Vancouver and the North Shore mountains soon became his playground. While in his youth, he would hike up Hollyburn Mountain with his skis on his shoulder. One day he met Nels Nelson, a celebrated Norwegian ski jumper, and Jack’s future passion was ignited. By 1950, Jack was the North American Ski Jumping Champion and in 1954, he went to Norway as a member of the Canadian jumping team for the World Championships but was unable to compete after breaking his ankle in a training jump. Jack also competed in National and International downhill races, winning many of them. Jack retired from jumping in 1960 and went on to teach at Mount Seymour. He skied Whistler/Blackcomb well into his 80’s.

We have updated the Hollyburn Historic Sites walking tour brochure with a few improvements. Once the snow has melted away and the trails are walkable, grab a copy and head up for a look.
