❄️ Can’t wait for ski season? Neither can we.

Early season passes for Frozen Thunder at Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park are now on sale at Shop.AlbertaParks.ca.

Frozen Thunder is a 4 km early-season ski trail that allows cross-country and biathlon athletes to start training as early as October.

How do we make snow appear before winter? Snow from the previous winter is stored under a protective layer of sawdust. When fall arrives, it’s uncovered and spread along the trail to create Frozen Thunder.

We interrupt your doom scrolling with the crackle of a campfire, the quiet of the evening and a reminder that parks can be places to rest, reset and simply be for a while.

Today, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we invite you to wear an orange shirt and join us in honouring residential school survivors, their families and the children who never returned home.

We recognize First Nations have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. Métis people have also shaped these lands and Alberta. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us.

Today can be a difficult time for those impacted by residential schools. The National Residential Schools Support Line is available 24/7 and provides immediate emotional support and crisis referral services for survivors and their families.

As the days grow shorter, trees begin preparing for winter, and shades of gold take centre stage throughout the province. It might look like magic, but there’s some interesting science happening behind the scenes.

Trees respond to seasonal changes in the length of daylight, known as the photoperiod.

As daylight hours decrease and temperatures cool, trees begin breaking down chlorophyll - the green pigment that helps leaves capture sunlight for photosynthesis.

As that chlorophyll disappears, it reveals the yellow and orange pigments that were there all along.

Of course, if you’d rather believe it’s magic, we won’t stop you. ✨

Our Kananaskis Mountain Rescue team has been very busy this year with July and August as the busiest months for our rescue crew.

The best rescue is the one you’ll never need, and there are many things you can do to stay safe on your adventures:

❗Know your limits. Turn around if conditions are harder than expected.
❗Know before you go. Have a plan, review weather, trail conditions and advisories.
❗ Tell someone your plan. Share your route and expected return time.
❗ Pack for the unexpected. Bring layers, water, food, a headlamp and first aid supplies.
❗ Respect mountain water. It is incredibly cold, rarely rising above 10 degrees Celsius - wear a life jacket and use extra caution.
❗ Read up on outdoor safety at AlbertaParks.ca/OutdoorSafety.
