It has been a difficult last 24hrs, to say the least. We have had many calls and emails since yesterday afternoon with regards to the chinook issue, asking what is going on and what are the options for our area. While we can’t give definitive answers until the official notice is released, we can give a rough update on what is happening in area 27/127 with the chinook fishery.
While we are severely disappointed with what our Federal DFO leaders have not accomplished with respect to this announcement, we still will be fishing during this period.
New update: the new regulations have been announced, a little change from what we thought earlier today. The new boundary for non-retention of chinook until midnight of July 14th is as follows (its a little confusing, but we has a similar boundary a couple of years ago with coho, fairly straight forward once you see the chart). 1nm from the seaward side of the Surfline is now the new chinook boundary line. You will be able to retain 2 chinook per day, inside of this new line. I’ll see if I can find a link to this on DFO’s website tomorrow, a visual will be easier.
Area 27 is still open for chinook retention (2 per day - same as 2018) but Area 127 (outside the Surfline) is part of the new regulations, non-retention of chinook until July 14th. Starting on July 15th, we are back to fishing the outside waters for chinook.
Inside Lippy Pt, Grants Bay, Perkins Rock, Kains Light, Inside of Lawn Point, Cliff Point, Harvey Cove, Brooks Bay (27-4) and all of Quatsino Sound (save for the RCA’s) are still open for inshore chinook fishing.
This is a tough time for the south coast, “politics in favour of science”. You would think in today’s world, governments would have knowledge to take scientific data (from their own departments no less) and work with it to produce a viable fisheries plan. Instead, they implemented such drastic measures, which by their own information, will not solve the issue.
Here is the link to DFO’s website for area maps, gives you a better idea. Also, this info is to the best of my knowledge, from the past few meetings that I have attended. Until the actual notice is out on the government fisheries notice webpage, no one can say for sure.
