On the night of August 27-28, 2026, the skies above Blachford Lodge will host one of the most remarkable celestial events of the year.

A partial lunar eclipse will see 96.2% of the Moon pass into Earth's shadow, turning it a deep reddish-orange at its peak. While not a total eclipse, it will be the most impressive lunar eclipse visible until 2028.

At Blachford, where dark northern skies are part of the experience, this celestial event becomes even more memorable. If the Northern Lights decide to appear, you could witness the dimmed, copper-coloured Moon alongside the aurora dancing overhead, an unforgettable pairing of two natural wonders.

What you’re seeing began approximately 150 million kilometres away. ☀️✨

The aurora borealis forms when energetic particles associated with the solar wind interact with Earth’s magnetic environment and are accelerated into the upper atmosphere. There, they collide with oxygen and nitrogen, transferring energy to the gases. As those gases release that energy, they illuminate the sky, often in vivid greens, with shades of red, blue, pink, and purple appearing under different atmospheric conditions.
