Here in the valley, winter comes with something truly special!
We had the chance to experience one of the most unique traditions of the region: the Carnaval d’Evolène. And it’s not just a weekend event… it lasts for more than a month and a half, unfolding little by little, full of surprises 😍
With the Alpiness crew, we joined as much of it as we could. From the opening moments to village celebrations. From public festivities to spontaneous private parties at home… all the way to the final evening on Shrove Tuesday, when the village burns the Poutratse, the symbolic “winter man” (check the last video of the carousel out). It was freezing cold that night, but also incredibly beautiful to witness together.
A little cultural context.
What makes this tradition even more fascinating is how deep its roots go. The exact origins aren’t documented, but historians believe some elements date back thousands of years 🫨. Masks and rituals meant to chase away winter spirits were likely already practised in the region during prehistoric times.
The idea was simple: protect the villages, welcome spring, and keep the community safe through the harsh mountain season. The Peluches and Empaillés we see today are echoes of those ancient beliefs.
Experiencing this together made the winter feel even more alive — full of joy, après-ski gatherings, early parties and late ones, and a strong sense of connection with the valley.
🏔 If you’d like to join us next year… spots are already filling up quickly. There are still a few places left in the dorm for next winter, you can find the details through the link in bio.
