The St. Moritz lake is close enough from this balcony to count the trees that surround it. But before the counting, breakfast: eggs, orange juice, a basket of croissants still warm. Fresh fruit and some coffee to round out the morning spread. The Kulm Post folded, but unread for now.

Steam does something to the garden of the Spa that sunlight alone can't. It makes the air itself visible, if only for a fleeting moment. The loungers need to remain empty a little bit longer, while the elements do their thing.

In each of the hotel's rooms, photographs and objects hint towards its heritage: black-and-white images of skiers, mid-air or caught low over the snow. Elsewhere in the spacious room, plaid pillows mirror that idea in wool. The Engadin in fabric and in frame.

In the Kulm Journal, Marinella Senatore talks to Mathis Neuhaus about light, memory, and why she calls her new St. Moritz installation a "civic plaza."

The Italian artist discovered that the Kulm was among the first buildings in Switzerland to introduce electric light in the 1890s. Her piece, unveiled in the village this August, takes that history as its starting point.

Late summer in St. Moritz, and no shortage of terraces. Umbrellas shade the ones that overlook the grass. Others face the lake, pine forest and peaks beyond. Breakfast comes with a view of the water, silver pots reflecting the gentle morning light. Across the field, the Kulm's yellow facade stays firmly in view.

In the Kulm Journal, author Ilona Hartmann writes about perfect cherries. Dark red, nearly black, eaten at exactly the right moment on a hotel terrace above the Alps. During her stay, she encountered General Manager Jenny Hunkeler, had a transcendent wellness experience, and enjoyed perfectly ripe fruit. Illustrator Olga Prader took inspiration from Hartmann’s text for a series of drawings, making the adventures of a cherry her focus.

A stay at the Kulm is, in theory, possible without ever leaving the grounds. A round on the golf course, an afternoon at the paddle and tennis courts, Carsten Höller's Pink Mirror Carousel for slow rotations in the afternoon, or a leisurely walk through Kulm Park. And all that before the Spa was even entered.

From 26 to 28 August, Kulm Country Club welcomes Varun Totlani for three nights during the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival.

Totlani is head chef of Masque in Mumbai, named India's best restaurant on Asia's 50Best list this year. His cooking draws on India's regional ingredients and techniques through a modern lens: foraged greens, fermentation, produce sourced close to home. A rare opportunity to taste his food outside Mumbai, for three nights only.
