Ask me how a pink mirrored carousel found itself in the middle of the ice rink, and I’ll remind you that up here, there’s no such thing as dreams too big. Life is a playground, after all, and what better way to honor the idea than with a little touch of fantasy by Carsten Höller. A little surreal? Perhaps. But most of all, iconic.

It’s probably not an overstatement to call the work of Swiss photographer Lukas Wassmann style-defining. Since the early 2000s, he has photographed people, animals, objects, and situations in a way that holds, skilfully and with unmistakable signature, the tension between nonchalant ease and meticulous composition.

This year, Wassmann spent time at the Kulm to document its rhythm, creating a new visual record of the hotel. In conversation with Charlotte Fischli, he talks about his process, and the image that comes to mind when he thinks of the Engadin.

To some, coming home means returning to the village they grew up in.
To me, it means a plate of Rösti, veal slices Engadin style on the side, and an uninterrupted view of the Leaning Tower of St. Moritz.

The Grand Restaurant is one of those places that accompany you from day to night – it just changes outfits.

In the morning, it’s all abundance: breakfast spreads, coffee refills and the gentle chaos of deciding what deserves a second plate. Come evening, the room transforms into an elegant setting for dinner, with low lights and tables dressed for the occasion.

The only thing that never changes? The smiling faces of Artemis and Foteini.

“Welcome back,” I hear as I swing through the doors into the grand entrance hall.
I look to my right and see familiar faces who know my name before I’ve even had a chance to say hello. Straight ahead, a spectacular arrangement of fresh flowers puts nature’s finest on full display.

The light falls softly through the windows as I make my way towards the check-in desk. A few steps, a warm welcome, a first sip of herbal tea – and just like that, I feel the outside world slipping away.

Stepping into Kulm means leaving the world behind. And like a little piece of home, this place is waiting exactly where I left it.

At the concierge desk, there are very few things you can’t ask for. A little extra time? Certainly. A last-minute table? Usually. The inside scoop? Absolutely not. Discretion is, after all, a concierge’s currency. Of course, that doesn’t stop me from trying. I ask about the romances, the surprises, the moments that never leave the room. But polite smiles tell me I’m not getting anywhere.

Until I ask for a grand gesture the team has orchestrated as of late. A proposal by the lake comes up. The details, naturally, remain a secret.

I sit in the lobby and wonder what these walls would say if they could talk. This is St. Moritz’ living room, after all. Would they tell me stories of cake trays mysteriously disappearing? About all the people who checked in quietly and disappeared into privacy? About all the hands shaken, the drinks poured, and the dinners devoured?

I glance over to a group of teenage boys biting into burgers the size of their heads, let myself drift into the sound of live piano, and reach for my second serving of homemade chips.

On a clear day, arriving in St. Moritz feels less like travelling and more like moving through a painting. No wonder artists and poets have been drawn back here for generations. Whether by train, car or private plane, the landscapes of the Engadine unfold like a film playing outside your window.

And then, finally, she appears: the Grande Dame of St. Moritz. Her butter-yellow façade stretches across the mountainside, impossible to miss and even harder to ignore. And I can’t help but think that while some places are part of the scenery, others make the scenery.

Nothing says “Welcome Back” quite like a good story – or a great image.

So, as the Kulm quietly prepares for a new season, let me introduce you to the trio who have been busy capturing the candid: photographer Lukas Wassmann, his four-legged assistant Norma, and myself… a hotel guest by day, and insider by nature.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve been roaming the corridors, lurking in the lobby, keeping an eye on the mountain, and naturally, collecting a few stories along the way. Some fun, some fancy, and some that perhaps
were never meant to leave the hotel.

Consider this your little glimpse behind the scenes.
