广州是我国南大门、三角洲冲积平原，地理条件优越，很早就发展起来。作为中国历代王朝至今的重要国际级港口（更经历了清朝闭关锁国期间“所有外国商船只允许通过广州进关”的“优待”），广州城早早声名在外，那时候老外管这个地方叫Canton（最可信的起源版本是，基于法语对“广东”的音译）。跟后来香港得洋名Hong Kong一样，都是老外约定俗成出来的一个易于传播的地名罢了。China也是约定俗成的，盛产瓷器（china）的大国。
