Guillermo Díaz at Villa San Juan 🎨⛰️

The walls of Villa San Juan Hostel hold the legacy of a remarkable man from the mountains of Boyacá: Guillermo Díaz.

Born in Mongua, high in the páramo, Guillermo lived many lives. He worked for years as a carpenter in Bogotá before returning to the mountains to become a coal miner, while dedicating himself to painting as a self-taught artist. His work reflects the landscapes, people, faith, and history that shaped his world.

A great admirer of Simón Bolívar, the independence movement, and biblical figures such as King David and Solomon, Guillermo painted with honesty, symbolism, and deep connection to rural Colombian life.

One of his dreams was to build a museum in his home in the mountains of Tópaga, where he could share his masterpieces with the world. At Villa San Juan, we are honored to preserve and exhibit part of his artistic legacy, keeping his memory alive for everyone who visits Boyacá.

We spent the day exploring the trails from Villa San Juan in Boyacá to the charming town of Tópaga 🌿

Along the way, every turn had something new — sweeping mountain views, a glimpse into a small coal mine (my first time seeing one up close), and a quiet river cutting through the landscape. Not to mention one very brave (or maybe just loud 😅) dog who definitely kept things interesting.

And at the end of it all, Tópaga welcomed us with its calm, timeless beauty.

Sometimes the best days are just about walking, noticing, and letting the place tell its story.

בילינו את היום בטיול לאורך השבילים מווילה סן חואן שבבויאקה אל העיירה המקסימה טופאגה 🌿

בדרך, כל פנייה הביאה איתה משהו חדש — נופים הרריים עוצרי נשימה, הצצה למכרה פחם קטן (הפעם הראשונה שלי לראות כזה מקרוב), ונהר שקט שזורם בין הנופים. וכמובן, כלב אחד אמיץ במיוחד (או אולי פשוט רועש 😅) שהוסיף קצת אקשן בדרך.

ובסוף, טופאגה קיבלה את פנינו ביופי רגוע ועל-זמני.

לפעמים הימים הכי טובים הם פשוט ללכת, לשים לב, ולתת למקום לספר את הסיפור שלו.

La ruta de hoy estuvo muy divertida, pasando por Monguí, llegamos al Cerro de las Tres Cruces, para tomar un divertido descenso hasta Tópaga. Aventuras únicas que solo descubrirás al hospedarte con nosotros 😉
