Costa Rica's high season books further ahead than most destinations. The popular properties over late November and early January go six to twelve months out, and the rest of January through March sits at five to six.

October runs consistent tuna and dorado with very little traffic on the water, which makes it one of the easier months to get a good day offshore.

Some of our favorite guest moments happen on the trails with our partners at .jaco, up in the hills right behind Herradura, a short drive from the resort gate.
Families ride out in small groups, and the youngest kids hop on with a parent. The route climbs through farmland and rainforest, crosses a river or two, and ends at a lookout where the whole bay opens up below.

Our guests always come back covered in mud, and we love hearing the kids ask to go again the next day.

Mornings at Casa del Sol begin with coffee beside the infinity pool, 330 feet above the Los Sueños Marina, while the rainforest slowly wakes up around you.

The house sits inside Vista Tres Bahías, a private community of just 28 homes surrounded by a jungle reserve full of wildlife. Each of the three suites has a king bed and its own view of the Pacific, and the home welcomes up to eight guests. Out on the deck, the Carolina stone stays cool underfoot, so the afternoon can drift from the pool to the lounge chairs without anyone checking the time.

The surf lesson usually turns into the whole afternoon.

Jacó is about ten minutes from Los Sueños, and the beach breaks there are patient enough that kids stand up on their first morning. A little further down the coast you reach Playa Hermosa, where anyone in the family who already surfs can paddle out on their own.

Everyone comes back sandy and starving, and the villa pool takes care of the rest of the day.

We drove up from Los Sueños into the hills toward Bijagual, and the air got cooler with every curve.

The kids rode up front in the side-by-side, grinning the whole way. Lunch was patacones with bean dip and guacamole at a table looking straight out over the forest, and a little green-and-black frog showed up to say hi. The restaurant cat kept an eye on us the entire time.

This is the view worth catching from the terrace at Terrazas de Marbella 6D, clouds painted soft pink and orange over the bay while a boat glides quietly past.

Green season skies often put on this kind of show, especially in the early evening.
