Hi ewerione ! Interested about sailing ? Good ! Here I like to share with you mi experience ... There are two ways to sail , as a creew or on your own boat .
Creew online:
you can find boat online ( newer shore if you will sail and you will be invited for personal meating , there will be contribution involved ( usually 15$ day) + money for fly ticket in case of places where you will need one if flying there.geting of boat ariving you will be recuested the ticket by customs or immigration remember that capitan is the responsible and there is nothing strange about the pist off capitan instead of getting finally rid of you have to carry you through his dream voayage in paradise understand with his girlfriend equally pist or paing your fly ...

Creew personally :
can find boat in harbors normally in places where people make last stop before leaving for crosing ( cheap food water etc. means not fancy islands ) you need to post on boards in the bar etc. and hang around full time ( yes you will not be alone and the boaters know it + they are tired of people aproching like Hi you need a creew take me pleaaaas!!! :) you will beter be clean and sober same your back pack . Hung around make friends and they will pick for themselfs remember this is not hitch hiking for five kilometers but a month trip! And there is no way back ...again no body will feed you for month for help or rarely ... There will be capitans taking anybody for cash (around 500 euro for transatlantic ) you can find reasonable price to (300 eu.) and you help +.
Unfortunately the days where people NEED Help are over (people get radars and all kind of stuff ) (thought not impossible ) and its turn quite biznis as herds of tourist travelers will cross stay for month and gracefully fly back home so ones more money less "real" travelers looking for way over see get screwed .plus the people don't miss the oportunity to make extra cash . Still people look for extra hands just for case and for night watch just for case to... So keep faith:)
It's important to understand that you will be on board for month in middle of nowhere there is no way back or anny possibility to say get out when it's turn into madness so wery five people will take random rasta on board and hope for good ( unless they are mad themselfs and there you are the one in trouble :) you need to talk interact day by day to show the real face and that you are not crazy ( not joke crossing can be hard on the sane spirit or one can get mad and dangerous afetr some ron !!!) and there he/she comes after month sain hi we will be leaving in two days and we thought to take You :) with as if you still want?!!!! Ahhhh ....
Now there will be much easy to island hoping as the distances are shorter and the people are relax and if you are realy lucky they will stick with you around islands for the crossing ( specially if you keep cool clean helpfull and discrete ( yes you will beter go for walk on beach or snorkel frecuently for hours so people have some privacy and their boat you know?:) and don't come back without lobsters ;) and....

you can get own boat that is the best ! Hmmm may be not... There are +- is to that . Cost responsibility hard work and high risk to loos it damage other boat get lost on see sink and die ( because you cudnt aford good dinghy ) and worriiiies about haw to become land traveler again when no body want to buy your boat you put sooo much money in ..)
Now can you sail whatewer boat ? Yep ! Will you make it ? Maybee ... !
Free boats :
why you think they are free? All about boats it's wery expensive thought you can recicle lot of stuf on the go you will need good boat for crossing and you will get away with less good for island hopping .. Shore free boat can be good to ( i get free trimaran in good shape ) have no money for motor chain good anchor and loose it in hurricane ...
Cheap boat :
why you think ? Oh newermind... Met guy get boat 11 meters steal for 2000 euro ! He sink it geting over coral to the beach ( yes be carefull with who you sail there is plenty wannabes and it can be hell of experience ..) that boat ewen old and rusty whas strong and good thought hollow inside !
We get beautifully blue water cruiser ( cape dory 28 ft. ) for 3000$ now that is just beginning several more thousands you must add before you can relay on
Other cheap boats:
look 24 ft. Mac Gregor just 1000 $ !!!! That's is we have a boat !!! No ... Not so simple ... Something we realize looking for boat is that small can be ok for you maybee you and other person but ! What's about seaworthiness ?! What's that shoe strings ? Rigging ?!!! Hi I can see you thru the hull:)) how thin it is , wow look that and this ... This kind of Barbie toy boats are for lake during the day with light winds what you expect when storm hits you in real world ? Yes I read to about all those people going around the world with that old Catalina but keep in mind that there are several gallons of resin and meters of Fiberglas and steal cables involved to improve such a boat lot of know how to sail and fix thinks when need to I whas all lose about all this until I inspect five of those cheap litle boats = forget about or die !
Bigger boats betwen more people is beter choice you can find 10-15 meters boats for 10000 $ and watch out cause there will be surprises you dont want to brake on the way ..
How good boat than ?
Good hull and rigging its a must motor its hmm must ? Will say yes unles you want to sit and watch how your dream go on rocks ( with you siting on!) cause the sails just get in peaces with that rain and blow you didn't expect ! ( we nearly lose our new boat geting to harbor (the first one) when our outboard get 3 times under water with that milioner mega yachts wake !!! And we get saved by poor fishermans on rugged boat with old outboard motor meter from the rocky beach!!!
Know how and quick acting and stuff ready to use its the key right after loot of caution !
I want to help with our experience not to discouraged you :)

Where to get boat:
Washington its abundant and cheap , florida to , North Carolina, Mariland thought hard to sail to south from ...Make research on craigslist. Com and see for yourself ( cheap means sometimes good but neglected boat means lot of money for reps . Boats curently sailing will be in beter shape and may haw reasons to why people want to get read of ...)
What more you need beside hull and rigging ? Sails ! You can find some on the island thrown away guess why well they can be still good after loot of stitching :) true is that boaters are frecuently rich so you can find loot of good stuff sometimes Good. anchoring system is equally important so returning from hike isn't there that snob with his gorilla asking you about you insurance pointing toward your boat half inside his milion dolar yacht .. What about electronics? I sail ones on boat there whas but a light bulb in the cabin and radio ( that one who sail over reef to get on the beach :) and hand held touristic compas stick in pot of earth with plant ( remember it whas steal boat so you need insulation unless you want to sail and sail and sail... ) it's good to have vhf so yo can call for help asc cuestion s communicate with harbour etc. deep sounder hmm you can stay in water deep inaf to see that is deep inaf well and real compas its helpful some navigation lights and ther you are new born pirat :) remember batery charger controler solar panel ( just that is around 500$) rest of the things you will figurate out after some sailing just go true some worst case sceneris and think hard all that what ifs. There is also security items cost guards will asc for ( make research ) they will be more willing close eyes if they see you try :)
Legal paper work:
be prepared you will not be recuested probably much your capitan licence ( unles in Europe !!!) but to fail check in country or island may result in confiscation of the vessel so leave the clouds slide down that colorful rainbow and there you are on the water in this duality 3 dimension right on the deck of your boat front of bunch of angry cops .. Just kidding you will be amazed how much magic you gona haw to come through :))) not exactly dolphins with magical rainbow rays but close (ohh:)

So where to hitchhike ?
Will suggest martinique , st.marten ( dangerous place) or a other island close to where the people leave carribiens for crossing may be good place brazil too .. Be there dont think to arrange something over Internet schedules can change as quick as the wether and you can get disappointed dont try miracles from home over wifi be there really ... The other way will suggest Canarian islands ...
The season go from October until late January ( I find boat in January and we were taken for mads as the risk of hurricanes increase . the boat whas 24 ft. I contribute 350euro learn a lot from the guy ( thanx Martin ) and enjoy 40 best days of mi life !! Hm not may be the best but yeah :))

About sea : it's pure crazy amazing wild mind consciousnes opening connecting powerful beautiful free scary hard frustrating . It's always the some you will be like oh no what I am doing here !!! Aaaahh and then the storm its over and you are glad you are there enjoing the waves dolphins sun and than oh no !!! nooo !!!! the ruder fall of ...

About capitans : hmm crazy egocentric rude stupid but never wrong ! Ok now seriously there is lot of types but manny are alone out there guess why lack of tolerance close minded with need to control happy adventurous open scared brave blablabla you will get what you need for your grove isn't it? :)

Happy to share from first hand some info i have search myself manny times online and read discouraging opinions of conventional boaters ( they will manny times don't Even think about crossing in annything smaller than 35 ft , we did it on home build plywood 24 feter we brake half rigging and the boom but we cross again i will stress that you need knowledge and material to fix there is no impossible IF you can fix stuff!
