Hotel Belmar’s chalet architecture carries a piece of our family history. Before settling in Monteverde, founders Pedro Belmar and Vera Zeledón lived in the Austrian Alps, where alpine homes left a lasting impression.

The goal was never to recreate Austria in the tropics. Instead, they brought its warmth, natural materials, and close relationship with the landscape into a distinctly Monteverde setting.

Wood, Costa Rican artisan tiles, and generous windows give the architecture its local character, framing the cloud forest and helping the hotel feel completely at home within it.

The land gives us plenty to work with. Seasonal ingredients from Finca Madre Tierra, our gardens, and local producers inspire each plate. From mushrooms and fragrant herbs to edible flowers and colorful botanicals, every element brings flavor, aroma, texture, and color to the table.

Spend a morning with Daniel, Forest Expert at SAVIA, and you’ll discover that the Spangle-cheeked Tanager’s brilliant blue cheeks aren’t created by blue pigment.

Like the shimmering wings of a Morpho butterfly, their vivid color comes from microscopic structures that interact with light.

Beautiful and busy, Spangle-cheeked Tanagers also help regenerate the cloud forest. As they feed on fruit, they disperse seeds across the landscape, helping new plants take root.

Our onsite garden is home to herbs, vegetables, edible flowers, and seasonal produce that bring freshness and character to our kitchens while reflecting our commitment to regenerative agriculture.

Take a stroll, follow the aromas, and discover where many of our ingredients begin. If you meet one of our team members along the way, don't hesitate to say hello. They love sharing the garden's stories and introducing guests to the remarkable flavors, fragrances, and edible treasures growing just steps from the hotel.
