There’s more to improving your surfing than time in the water.

A typical day at Surf Simply is built around making the most of every hour. You’ll surf, review your footage with your coach, work through the theory behind what you experienced out there, and then actually have time to switch off. Good food, good company, and an evening cocktail with Diego at the bar.

Every part of the day is designed with the same intention as the coaching itself.

An explanation of decisions made when surfing

Are you still struggling to read a surf forecast?

Here are the 3 metrics that actually matter and most surfers get them wrong.

Wave Height measured from the trough to the crest of an open ocean wave. It’s the number everyone looks at first, but it’s actually not the most important one.

Period the time interval between each wave passing a fixed point (like a buoy). This is the one you should really care about. A longer period = more energy stored below the surface, meaning heavier, more powerful waves regardless of height.

Direction the angle the swell is traveling. The more directly a swell hits a beach, the more power gets translated into the surf. Refraction around the coastline can kill a swell fast.

Next time you check a forecast, stop fixating on height alone. Look at the period first. That number tells the real story.

Save this for your next surf check.

An angled take-off sets direction early. It gives you more time, more control, and keeps you in the open face instead of getting trapped behind the whitewater.

Start by reading the wave. Steeper waves need more angle, softer waves need less.

Then:
- Look where you want to go
- Lean into the inside rail to engage the edge
- Lift the outside rail
- Pop up once the board is set and moving

Get the angle right, and everything after becomes easier.

Save this for later.

Still struggling with your pop-up?

The pop-up is the foundation of everything in surfing. Get this right and everything else gets easier.

STEP 1: Hands behind your shoulders, flat on the deck. Stagger them to create more space.

STEP 2: Lock out your arms BEFORE you move your legs. Weight stays focused over your hands.

STEP 3: Swing your legs forward under your body and plant your front foot.

STEP 4: Push up off your hands as you extend upward.

STEP 5: Maintain your highline and look ahead for your next target.

Break it down, slow it down, repeat it on dry land before you hit the water.

Save this for your next session.
