Want to generate speed on your backside?

There are two main aspects a surfer should consider to efficiently generate speed by pumping: Rail Engagement and Compression/Extension.

When pumping on the backside, it is much more important to rotate the upper body and bring the trailing arm forward. On our backside, we use our heels to pull our board up and down the face of the wave, unlike the toes on our forehand which offer much more nuanced control.

1 - Compress over the front foot and begin to apply weight to the heels, around the mid part of the face.

2 - As the board goes through the apex of the turn, begin to extend and shift weight onto the back foot. Make sure the trailing arm comes forward and up towards the lip of the wave.

3 - Allow the board to come to the top of the wave, release weight from the heel rail while keeping weight on the back foot. This will cause the nose to drop.

4 - Shift the weight forward and again compress over the front foot.

Repeat the cycle.

Pumping General Rule: It’s more about the board traveling up and down the face, rising and falling, and less about throwing arms around.

Soft rails in the front wrap water around the edge and into the wave face, creating grip and traction. Hard rails toward the tail shed water quickly off a sharp edge, reducing drag and allowing for a cleaner, more responsive release.⁠

Are you struggling with your backhand surfing?

Having the leading hand over the wrong rail is one of the most common backhand errors in surfing. Most surfers never notice they’re doing it.

On your forehand, the leading hand sits naturally over the toe rail. On your backhand, that same position works against you. The leading hand needs to move to the heel rail. This opens your chest toward the direction you are travelling and allows for a more balanced turning position.

Hand position can determine turn quality. Heel rail pressure keeps your center of balance over the middle of the board, so the turn is driven by rail engagement rather than momentum.
