Every year, humpback whales travel more than 8,000 km from the icy waters of Antarctica to the warm, sheltered waters of Golfo Dulce, one of the world’s most important nursery grounds, to give birth and nurse their calves.

Thanks to Costa Rica’s unique location, humpback populations from both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres visit these waters at different times of the year.

Our Southern Hemisphere whales arrive from July through November, with pregnant females reaching the gulf first to give birth, followed by the males. And if you’re lucky enough to stop the boat and let the ocean fall quiet, you may even hear the males’ haunting, complex songs echoing beneath the surface.

🐋 Whale season is here. While encounters in the wild are never guaranteed, right now is one of the best times of year to experience these incredible animals in Golfo Dulce.

Cada año, las ballenas jorobadas recorren más de 8.000 km desde las frías aguas de la Antártida hasta las cálidas y protegidas aguas del Golfo Dulce, uno de los grandes refugios naturales donde vienen a dar a luz y amamantar a sus crías.

Gracias a la ubicación única de Costa Rica, las poblaciones de ballenas jorobadas del hemisferio sur y del hemisferio norte visitan nuestras aguas en diferentes épocas del año.

Las ballenas del hemisferio sur llegan entre julio y noviembre. Primero llegan las hembras preñadas, que buscan estas tranquilas aguas tropicales para dar a luz, seguidas por los machos. Y si tienes la suerte de detener el motor de la embarcación y dejar que el océano quede en silencio, quizá puedas escuchar incluso los complejos cantos de los machos resonando bajo la superficie.

🐋 La temporada de ballenas ya está aquí. Aunque los encuentros con fauna silvestre nunca están garantizados, este es uno de los mejores momentos del año para vivir la magia de las ballenas jorobadas en el Golfo Dulce.
