Nature has a way of knowing when a friend is leaving. 🌿✨

This is Carrie, one of our beloved guests. On her final morning, the jungle came alive to say goodbye! From the majestic Bare-throated Tiger Heron to the vibrant Scarlet Macaws and the vocal Grey-headed Chachalacas, it was a true symphony of the wild. 🦜🦅

Carrie came to find peace in our little piece of paradise, and it’s safe to say nature embraced her right back.

🌿 Miconia argentea · Melastomataceae
This lovely tree is known here by several names.
María — or “Mary” — named for her white cloak of flowers, a symbol of purity.
She is also called Lengua de Vaca (Cow Tongue Tree), inspired by the shape and texture of her leaves.
While no medicinal uses are known, María’s true gift is ecological 💚
When in fruit, she produces an abundance of berries that feed local wildlife. Dozens of species of colorful birds gather in joyful swarms to feast.
🐝 When in flower, the tree becomes a magnet for stingless honey bees, with many species visiting to collect pollen.
A generous tree, and a loyal ally —
a true friend of the birds and the bees 🌸🕊️🐝

Syzygium malaccense (Myrtaceae)
Manzana de Agua · Pomarosa · Mountain Apple · Malay apple

Known by many names across the tropics
In Hawaiʻi it’s called ‘Ōhi‘a ‘ai or mountain apple.
In Costa Rica, manzana de agua, especially common in the rainy Atlantic zones.
Across Latin America it’s often known as poma rosa, and in Venezuela as pumalaca.

The fruit is sweet and pear-like, and produced beautiful fuchsia pink flowers that form an enchanting carpet around the trees base. In January flowers are prolific then comes the fruits in March. When plating these, patience is required — trees take about 7 years to bear fruit. Here we see one we planted over 20 years back!

Traditional uses:
• Bark used for sore throats and deep cuts
• Crushed leaves taken for bronchitis
• Inner bark produces a brown kapa dye
• Fruit skin yields a rich red dye
One of the first fruits tasted by early Hawaiians — a true ancestral tropical fruit.

One month. One unforgettable journey. ✨
Anna, our amazing volunteer from Germany, spent a month with us and we said “good bye” the best way we know how — galloping on horses along the beach at sunset. 🐎🌅
From epic beach rides to refreshing baths in hidden waterfalls, and exploring our most beautiful, wild beaches… this was more than an adventure — it was a deep connection with nature. 🌿💦
Come visit us.
Come as a volunteer.
We’re happy to share our little paradise with everyone looking for a true immersion in nature. 💚
