Our story

Stray Cat Hostel is located in San José, but it was born in Istanbul in 2010. Lots of stray cats (feline and human varieties) came to rest, nest, and entertain there over the course of 7 years. Many beautiful pieces of art spread across the walls and the hearts of those who traveled there but the time came to move on and so the owner closed up shop and followed his wanderlust.

The cat who created this backpackers’ nest knew that affordable, clean, simple lodging was what travelers wanted and he kept in mind the laid back, mellow, cool, worldly, and inspiring people who had come to share space. Meanwhile, a new partner showed up with big ideas about changing the world through sustainable architecture and design. They decided to channel their love of life and travel into a new eco-hostel in the heart of Costa Rica where good vibes and nourishing nature abound.

Now, Stray Cat is practicing the art of travel and living in San José where the land is rich and the motto is Pura Vida. We’ve connected with local experts to uncover all the best ways to enjoy the city and country and are excited to share them with you! Come stay with us to explore the wild streets of this eclectic capital city and connect with fellow travelers in a cozy hostel that feels like home. When you’re ready to move on, as all nomads must, we’ll point you in the direction of the best places for whatever you’re seeking; cultural exchange, adventure, relaxation, it’s all here waiting for you.
