A toucan that looks like it came straight out of a fantasy movie has been spotted in Costa Rica. Instead of the classic rainbow colored feathers we all know, this one is almost entirely white. It’s not an albino, though, it’s leucistic, and that makes it incredibly rare.

So what’s the difference? Albinism means an animal lacks all pigment, including in the eyes, which usually turn pink or red. Leucism, on the other hand, is a condition where the bird’s feathers lose their color but the eyes, beak, and other features stay normal. That’s why this toucan still sports its iconic bright beak, but with a ghostly white body that makes it look like a myth come to life.

Birdwatchers and scientists went wild over this sighting, because leucistic animals are hard to find in the wild. The condition is uncommon and often makes animals more visible to predators, which is why most don’t survive long. Spotting one thriving in the forests of Costa Rica is like hitting the wildlife jackpot.

Toucans themselves are already fascinating. With beaks that can be up to half the length of their bodies, they use them for everything from reaching fruit to regulating body temperature. Now add the rarity of leucism, and you’ve got a bird that feels more like a legend than reality.

What makes this even cooler is that Costa Rica is already a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 900 species of birds. But even in a place that colorful and wild, a leucistic toucan stands out as something truly extraordinary.
