Bodhi Surf + Yoga B Corp and 1% for the Planet certified, community-engaged surf + yoga camp in Bahia Ballena, Costa R

Bodhi Surf + Yoga in Bahia Ballena, Osa, Costa Rica, is a life project that was started by a few friends in 2010, all of whom had a desire to contribute positively to our local and global communities, as well as share our passions and knowledge with others. Today it is a place where we live out their life’s purpose and inspire others to do the same. We are proud to be the first Certified B Corporation surf + yoga camp in the world, a 1% for the Planet member, and more recently, a carbon neutral tourism destination! Through Bodhi Surf + Yoga’s various vacation options (Bodhi Sessions, Bodhi Family, Bodhi Awaken, and retreats), we share the fundamentals and foundations of these silent activities with the goal of education and helping guests develop the skills and knowledge for self-practice both on the mat and in the water. Bodhi Surf + Yoga is a place of learning, yes, but also a place of relaxation, fun, laughter, food, and community!

The yoga here is not for one kind of person.

Natascha came for the surf: "the yoga classes are so pertinent to the body's needs for surfing."

Chelsi came because her husband wanted to surf: "I wanted a yoga retreat, and he wanted to surf."

Bernie came with forty years on the mat: "I am a very picking student. I enjoyed the daily classes with her immensely."

Albert came with a shoulder that could not do everything: "she proactively flagged specific poses to skip and arranged a private, gentler session before the main class so I wouldn't miss out entirely."

And if you have never unrolled a mat in your life, the class is for you too. Most mornings Pilar builds it around who is on the deck and what the water did to their shoulders the day before.

We reopen Saturday 7 November. The weeks with a room are on the reservation page, link below.

If you practised with Pilar, what stayed with you?

There is a moment most Sundays when the van pulls in and somebody steps out who has never met a single person here. Last January that somebody was Darsi. The only booking of the week.

We had written to her before she flew. If a week as the only guest felt wrong, she could move her dates. She kept them.

Here is the part nobody planned. The group already at the lodge heard someone was arriving alone on Sunday, and that there was room. They had not wanted to go home anyway. So they stayed.

Darsi walked into the dining room that first night and the table was already full.

These are her photos. Luci's table. The week in chalk. The boards on the sand. The porch at Espiritu. The walk home.

She came back in April, two weeks, the first with her dad, the second with a friend. And two of the people at that January table are with us again right now, for fourteen days.

If you were at that table in January, say hi below. Darsi would love that. And if you have ever booked a trip on your own and were not sure about it, tell us how it went.

Maya was two when she named it.

Past Bodhi families heard about it first. Now it is your turn.

Casa de Juntos. The house of together. Three bedrooms, a front patio, and a rancho out back with one big sofa and a table for six.

The glow on the cover is the yoga platform, as you see it from the Casa patio after dark. That is your evening view when you stay here.

It is for the people who come as one group and want to stay as one. A family. Three couples. Old friends who finally found a week that works.

Same beach, same team, your own front door.

Want the details? Comment CASA and we send them to you.

Who would you bring, and who gets the king bed?

Osa made the New York Times list.

Fourth in the world for 2026, the only place in Central America. We did not write that. We just live here.

So here is what a week in our corner of Osa pays for. Ten guests, never more. A full time team of seven, and beyond them a livelihood for 16 local people. Lessons inside a national park whose entrance fees pay the rangers who protect it.

Pilar Salazar asked the question years ago: "What about a business that is in service to others?" Fifteen years in, she and Travis Bays are still answering it, one morning at a time. 💙

Who told you about this coast first? A friend, a review, a list? We collect origin stories.

Fishermen named the ocean's biggest mood swing.

On the coast of Peru, they noticed it long before scientists did. Some years, right around Christmas, the sea turned warm and the fish moved away. They called it El Niño, the child, after the one born at Christmas.

This year it is back, and strong. In August the Pacific along the equator ran about 2.5°C (4.5°F) above normal: the warmest in 38 years of records, warmer than the big El Niño years of 1997 and 2015. Costa Rica's national weather institute says it could last until June 2027.

Here in Uvita, September is usually our wettest month. This year our coast is on track for about 60 percent less rain than normal. At the lodge it looks quiet: the sprinklers are off, the surf gear gets rinsed with rainwater from the collector, and the town's water still comes down from the mountains behind us.

Where you live, the same ocean may look very different this winter.
United States: milder and drier across the north, wetter from California to Florida, with Colorado right on the line.
Canada: milder almost everywhere, less snow out west, more rain in Ontario and Quebec.
Europe: a wetter, windier start to winter, then a colder, calmer end.

It reminds us of the first thing we teach in the water: read the ocean before you paddle out. The fishermen did exactly that. They watched, they noticed, they gave it a name. One warm stretch of the Pacific, and the weather over your house changes with it.

We are collecting forecasts from every coast. What is it doing where you live?

"We should really go."

Be honest. You have said it. Over dinner, on the couch, halfway through someone else's holiday photos. Probably to the same person, probably more than once.

So here is your nudge. Until 20 October, a week at Bodhi for two is up for auction with our friends at the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund. Seven days of surf, yoga and meals at one long table in Uvita. The highest bid takes it.

Why them? ATCF was started in 2016 by adventure travel companies who knew no single company could protect the places we all travel to on its own. So they pool it. Their grants of $10,000 to $20,000 go to local and Indigenous communities already doing the work where they live: 53 projects so far, from mountain gorillas in Uganda to the jungle in Colombia. The money goes to the people who live right next to what they protect.

Worst case, someone outbids you and your bid still went to a good cause. Best case, you two finally stop saying it and go. 💙

Who is the person you keep saying it to? Tag them. Bidding link in the first comment.

Nobody here is trying to make you a surfer.

Strange thing for a surf school to say. But one guest wrote down what Travis tells people on the sand, and it explains it better than we can: "surfing is not really about conquering the waves. It is about learning your relationship with struggle. You wipe out, you paddle back out. You miss your pop up, you paddle back out. Sometimes you are afraid, and you go in anyways."

Two hours inside Marino Ballena National Park. You will fall more than you stand, and nobody on this beach is counting. Falling is not the part you get through. It is where it starts.

What you take home is not a skill. It is a relationship: with the ocean, with struggle, with the part of you that went in anyway.

That is the whole reason Bodhi exists. We do not need you to become a surfer. We need the ocean to have one more person on its side.

Afraid of it, did it anyway. What was yours?

The yoga here follows the tide, not the clock.

Most mornings that means 7:15, before the surf, before your phone, before the list of things. Some days the ocean says otherwise and the mat waits until 11:30 or 4:30. Which means you never have to choose between the mat and a good wave.

Pilar has been teaching since 1999. She is not trying to make anyone flexible. In her own words, she is trying to quiet the noise in people's heads, and she builds each week's practice around what your body did in the water the day before.

Most of us have not had a quiet head in a very long time.

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

Can I still learn this?

He was 57 and had tried many times. His review says the rest better than we could: "I came to Bodhi as a 57 year old reasonably athletic man who has never quite learned to surf. I tried many times with no luck. By the end of the week I was catching waves on my own." 🌊

He is not the exception. Guests in their fifties and sixties stand up here every week. Julian, about his own mother: "my 60 year old mother did not think she was even going to go in the ocean but she went in everyday with the surfing instructor Dennis and had a blast."

And what if it is too big the week you come? Chaman stays gentle. A bigger swell arrives here as long walls of white water, exactly what you learn on.

Heidi found the five words that describe the week better than anything we could write: challenged but never overwhelmed.

Everything else, boards, tides, entrances, what to bring, is in the guide: https://www.bodhisurfyoga.com/best-place-to-learn-to-surf-in-costa-rica?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=always_on&utm_content=post05
