You open your laptop open at 8, then have the shala to yourself until the yoga starts. The cave pool is your lunch break and a surf before your traditional casado dinner watching the sun go down.

Honestly, we think green season might be the best time to be here. We’re in what’s meant to be one of the wettest weeks of the year and it’s barely rained, but everything is unbelievably green. The gardens, the hills, the light in the afternoon. It’s Costa Rica at its most beautiful, without the heat and crowds of dry season. Hotel Balu feels pretty special right now, even more than usual.

From Balu to the beach.

Just a short ride from your room and you’re at one of Costa Rica’s quieter little treasures. Soft white sand, palms, wildlife, brilliant surf breaks and plenty of space to find a shady spot, open a good book and stay until sunset.

Most of the bay still feels wonderfully untouched, but tucked away from the beachfront are some great little bars and restaurants to wander into when you’re ready for a drink or something to eat.

You’ll notice the lights are red here too, helping protect the turtles that come ashore to nest throughout much of the year.

One of those places that feels a little bit hidden, a little bit wild, and very easy to fall in love with. Just down the road from Hotel Balu.

What did you do this weekend?

Well, I spent the evening in a heated pool on the top deck of Hotel Balu, looking at a sky full of stars, surrounded by jungle sounds of crickets, cicadas, fruit bats and geckos. Heaven.
