Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean with a mix of colonial towns, beautiful countryside and beach resorts. Cuba’s capital city, Havana, is located towards the western tip of the island and is the largest city on the island by some way. Central Cuba, to the east of Havana, is home to the colonial towns and cities of cienfuegos trinidad sancti spiritus santa clara & remedios and is the most popular part of the island for visitors interested in the country’s history. The countryside in central Cuba is also very scenic, home as it is to the Escambray Mountains. Approaching the eastern end of the island the terrain again becomes much more mountainous as one drives from the town of bayamo through the famous Sierra Maestre and on to the city of santiago , the second largest in the country. The famous town of Guantanamo is a short drive east of Santiago while, further along the coast, is baracoa , the oldest colonial town in the Americas. Cuba is also famous for its many spectacular beaches, the majority of which line the north coast all the way east of Havana. jibacoa is the nearest resort to Havana while varadero is the island’s largest beach resort. Just off Cuba’s north coast are a series of island resorts such as santa maria cayo ensenachos cayo guillermo and cayo coco which are all joined to the mainland by causeway. Continuing east along the mainland are the resorts santa lucia and then guardalavaca
Although the majority of Cuba’s beach resorts are located along the north coast, Playa Ancon near Trinidad has a lovely beach while the island of cayo largo in the Caribbean Sea has some of Cuba’s finest sandy beaches. Continuing east, the island becomes increasingly flat with sugar plantations and cattle ranches. There is very little modern development in this part of Cuba and the towns of camaguey , Las Tunas & holguin make good stopping off points. Cigars
Cuba is famous for its world famous cigars which can be purchased for a fraction of the cost they command in the UK. Most of Cuba’s tobacco comes from Pinar del Rio province to the west of Havana where visitors can see cigars being made in the traditional way. Cigars are also made at the Partagas cigar factory alongside the Capitol Building in Old Havana. Entry Requirements

Cuba is famous for its music and there are numerous venues where you can go to hear live music. Most large towns will have a Casa de la Trova with live, nightly music, almost always of a very high standard. Entrance is seldom more than 1 peso with as many locals as tourists in the audience. There will usually be a number of different acts together with a bar to help fuel your enjoyment. Security
Cuba is one of the safest tourist destinations in the world. Violent crimes against tourists are extremely rare. However, cases of bag snatching & petty thieving are on the increase in the cities and visitors should take all the normal precautions with their belongings – do not display valuable jewellery and always use the safe in your room for valuables, cash and passports. We recommend that you do not leave your passport at reception – unless in a secure safe. Any loss of these valuable documents should be reported immediately. We also recommend that for all flights you take any valuables in your hand luggage and, if you have one, take a hard suitcase for the hold (unless hiring a car in which case we recommend soft bags that fit into boots more easily)
