Our dearest friends,
Today our nation celebrates the Greek Independence Day. It is observed by all Greeks around the world in order to commemorate the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 against the Ottoman oppression.
This day has become the landmark in the country’s history starting the new era of liberation and independence, setting values and ideas for future generations.
Furthermore, the national holiday coincides with the religious holiday of the Orthodox Church’s celebration the Annunciation to the Theotokos (Mother God).
As tradition has it that day on March 25, 1821, Bishop Palaion Patron Germanos raised the flag of the revolution over the Monastery of Lavra in the Peloponnese. And the words “Freedom or Death” – “Ελευθερία ή θάνατος” – ever since has become known to every Greek.
One cannot overestimate the importance of this event, its symbolism, and contribution to the new history of the world.
Happy Independence Day!
