Did you know 48 hours in nature can improve your sleep?
Research led by Professor Kenneth Wright at the University of Colorado has shown that a weekend trip to nature — with days full of natural light and dark nights — can have a significant impact on your circadian rhythm.
How does it work?
Specifically, after just two days of camping without artificial light, participants’ bodies began releasing melatonin (the sleep hormone) an average of 1.4 hours earlier. This weekend exposure was enough to achieve a 69% shift in rhythm compared to what researchers previously measured after a full week in nature.
Studies also show this effect is most pronounced in winter, when days are shortest.
Important note: To maintain these benefits, it is essential to keep a regular sleep schedule after returning home, as this is not a permanent, automatic fix.
