🚨 WARNING – Highway Scam Between France and Barcelona 🚨
Hey everyone,
I wanted to share a recent (and unfortunately very real) experience from my solo camper journey to Portugal
While travelling alone from France towards Barcelona, about 40–50 km after crossing the border into Spain, Autopista del Mediterráneo AP-7 I was targeted by a highway scam. A car pulled up next to me, and the person inside began frantically signaling that something was wrong with my camper. *an other person in the back seat hiding looks as there is on one person in the car) Since I was pulling a trailer, I thought there might actually be an issue and pulled over onto the shoulder.
As I stepped out to check, the man distracted me, pointing at some supposed issue with a back tire. Meanwhile, the other men opening my camper and taking my belongings computer bag wallet phone so on....
I had the car key in my hand but I hadn’t locked the camper in the rush, and it all happened so fast.
The police later told me that this is a common scam in that region, especially targeting solo travellers and foreigners. Some people only realize they've been robbed hours later. 😞
🔒 My advice:
👉 DO NOT STOP for anyone on that stretch unless you're 100% sure it's an emergency.
👉 Never leave your camper unlocked, even on the side of a busy highway.
👉 If in doubt, drive to the nearest gas station or police station to check your vehicle.
On the bright side, I had theft insurance, so I was able to claim compensation for some of the items. I had to prove invoices.
🙏 Big thanks to AXA and Galaxus—most of my gear was from Galaxus, and their records really helped me during the claim process.
I hope my story helps others avoid the same fate.
Stay safe out there, and keep on rolling. 🚐💨
