Smartloft apt&art

Smartloft apt&art smartloft apt&art is a lovely mixture of small hotel and furnished apt with art from local and international artists.

To rent out apartments is an old idea of ours. While traveling we noticed each time that the mixture of a small hotel and a furnished apartment allows much more freedom and comfort than a big international hotel chain. Our spacious and carefully designed spaces provide the possibility to submerge into a different world of thoughts with a more personal and creative touch. After experiencing generic

and uninviting business hotels in our numerous stays abroad, we were inspired to create a cozy and affordable accommodation in Berlin. After the acquisition and refurbishing of a Berlin-Mitte house from 1871, smartloft apartments & art was born! Artist Curated Exhibitions
Art challenges us to think. An artist‘s opinions, reactions, and his or her world is uniquely expressed in artworks, often with relevance to society and politics. smartloft apartments&art believes that bringing art from the gallery into a private space allows a more intimate conversation between the work and the observer. Living with an artwork generates a different type of contemplation and introspection than the experience permitted at a gallery or museum. Not only are we intent in providing a resonant experience to our guests, but we are also interested in presenting artists the opportunity to show in our carefully designed apartments, and/or to create site specific work which then only belongs to this particular space and time. We currently organize two curated shows per year.

Hello Smartloft guests, as often in the last time we announce an opening that is taking place on a Friday evening because there is no better way to welcome the weekend than with joining an exhibition opening. On Friday, December 16, starting at 6pm, Kunstsaele Berlin will open the show “Klappe eins, Affe tot” with works from the collection Bergmeier. Art from the 1960s up to today - concerning predominantly minimal and conceptual art will be on display – from canonical figures (such as Art & Language and Günther Uecker), to recent rediscoveries (such as Donald Bernshouse and Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt), to established young artists (such as Michael Müller and Carsten Nicolai). The exhibition’s title is a take on the saying “Klappe zu, Affe tot..“ [“Cover Closed, Monkey Dead”]; a reference to the practice, once customary in circuses and carnivals, of using a monkey in a wooden cage or booth to attract visitors. If the monkey died, the cage remained covered and the performance was canceled.

The exhibition at ACUD is the most comprehensive presentation of Fehr and Rühr’s artistic practice to date. Besides the trilogy Polyrhythm Technoir, one of their very first films My Language is an Unpaved Road (Crystal Bridges) (2013) will be shown as well. Two more works created in recent years supplement the selection. The works, dealing with inclusion and exclusion, mainstream and underground, match outstandingly with a place like ACUD. Thanks to the interplay of art, music and discourse and with its diverse protagonists, the Kunsthaus addresses different audiences and offers a unique context as well as an exceptional source of inspiration for contemporary artists.
