Hessen’s oldest castle youth hostel is perched high above the River Eder. 🏰 Since May 2025, Burg Hessenstein has once again been part of the DJH Landesverband Hessen and invites you to stay in the heart of the Kellerwald, right next to the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.

Here, history comes to life and nature becomes an adventure. 🌲 There’s plenty to discover around the castle: nature trails, a football pitch, a games room, as well as barbecue and campfire areas ensure that boredom is guaranteed not to set in.

And for those who want to spend time together after an eventful day, the historic walls house a fireplace lounge, a music room and even a real knights’ hall.

Situated right next to the forest, the youth hostel offers a large outdoor area with a beach volleyball court, a football pitch and a campfire site. There’s plenty of space here to play, run about and relax. ⚽🔥

Situated on the southern outskirts of the city, it’s just a stone’s throw from the zoo. 😺 Here, you’ll come face to face with a giraffe, hear a tiger’s roar from afar and sneak through a mysterious underground zoo maze. You can immerse yourself in the savannah, meet rainforest inhabitants in the South America area and get up close to meerkats, giraffes and more. Playgrounds and feeding stations ensure fun for young and old alike! 🐾

Osnabrück has plenty more to offer too: on one side lies the Teutoburg Forest, on the other the historic ‘City of Peace’. Gaze at the stars in the planetarium, stroll through the lively old town or explore museums; you’ll never get bored here, right in the heart of the UNESCO Terra Vita Geopark. 🌳

Fancy a walk with alpacas in the Unstrut Valley? These gentle animals captivate everyone instantly – a unique adventure for the whole family, where anyone aged 12 and over can lead their ‘own’ animal. 💫

🥾 Your starting point is the Nebra Youth Hostel – high above the rooftops, with views over the vineyards and down into the idyllic Unstrut Valley. This is where the Nebra Sky Disc was once hidden. Make the most of the numerous sports and leisure activities on the large grounds and explore a region that has been shaped by winegrowing for over a thousand years.

🚣🏼‍♂️ And what else? Why not continue your adventure by canoe on the Unstrut, on a journey of discovery through the “Arche Nebra”, or by splashing about in the neighbouring terraced outdoor adventure pool? In the evening, the panoramic terrace is the perfect spot to unwind.

Why is Dresden our favourite destination this week? In 2026, the hostel was awarded the ‘GÄSTELIEBLING’ prize by the Saxony State Tourism Association, recognising its exceptionally high guest satisfaction and outstanding hospitality. 🏆

With 478 beds, it is the largest youth hostel in Saxony and scores highly, above all, for its central location: the historic old town is within easy walking distance. The rooms also have some special features: all rooms have an en-suite bathroom with shower and toilet, including towels. Instead of bunk beds, you’ll find comfortable, pre-made single or double beds. 🛏️✨
