You have come to an owner-managed family brewery in the Westerwald, where true craftsmanship merges with decades of tradition. Raising your glass with its glossy golden liquid to your lips, you take a large sip from it, your eyes closed to better taste the spicy-grassy hops lending its characteristic flavour to the barley juice.

You are standing at the large wooden table in the Arp lab, studying the moist clay your child is in the process of kneading with enthusiasm. An abstract shape, almost reminiscent of Dadaism, has been created there – wild and imaginative. Your child suddenly halts, turning around their asymmetrical sculpture, scrutinising their work and calling out happily: “That’s you!”

A castle like in a fairy tale with everything that goes with it – towers, alcoves, pitched roofs, thick walls and a castle bridge. Eltz Castle has been somewhat hidden away in a side valley of the Moselle for more than 850 years, in the middle of a forest on a rocky promontory. So fabulously beautiful that it has now become a star on Instagram.

The impressive fortress high above the Rhine is your gateway to the fascinating Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the entire building has been preserved as it was and is today a kind of museum of the era of knighthood. With its characteristically furnished forge, armoury, great hall, bedchamber, kitchen and torture chamber. The climb is worth it, if only for the fantastic view…
