When the SAS Royal Hotel opened in 1960, its facilities included a fitness centre - alongside restaurants, shops and the airline terminal connecting guests with Copenhagen Airport.⁠
⁠
It was all part of a hotel created for a new era of international travel.⁠
⁠
65 years later, guests are still working out under the same roof.

Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal down to the door handles, and the Swan and the Egg were created specifically for the hotel. Tivoli Gardens is right across the street, and you can rent a bike at the hotel to explore the city like a local.⁠

Copenhagen called it a cigar box. ⁠

When the SAS Royal opened opposite Tivoli Gardens in 1960, its glass tower was too modern for many. Critics nicknamed it “the glass cigar box”. ⁠
⁠
But the glass tower was only part of Arne Jacobsen’s vision. He designed everything, down to the door handles and the cutlery. ⁠
⁠
That included two curved chairs made specifically for the hotel: the Swan and the Egg. ⁠
⁠
Today, they are two of the most recognisable chairs in Danish design. Both started here, in a building that once divided opinion in Copenhagen. ⁠

Next time you pass Tivoli Gardens, look up.
