Nyborg Castle
The present Nyborg Castle's history dates back to around 1200. The powerful, squat tower and the basement of the castle building are the remains of the original castle which was surrounded by a 1.5 m thick curtain wall with semicircular corners. The castle was due to its central location, venue for the so-called Danehoffer, meetings between the king and kingdom's clerics and secular great men, by approx. 200 years, until Erik of Pomerania made Copenhagen the capital. The castle was expanded through the centuries and changed under Christian III mid 1500-century character castle. During the Swedish wars in 1658-59 under the castle so much damage that it lost its status as a royal residence, and thus began the castle's decline. Decay stopped first in the 1900-century, when the ruins were restored. Since 1920-s, the castle as a museum. The audience can see the old furniture and models of the castle and an exhibition about Nyborg as garrison town in the years 1670-1913.
