**The Problem:**
The river to the north side of my garden had been scoured to bedrock for years. During heavy rains, it becomes a devastating flood channel—eroding banks, washing away material, and offering no water retention for the ecosystem.
**The Solution:**
I've built a **cascade of 16 check dams** spanning the stream, with **7 now actively holding water**. Here's what I did:
✨ **Widened bases** with local gravel, cobbles, and silt
✨ **Dug out pools** behind dams to create storage & energy dissipation
✨ **Reinforced 2 upstream dams** with tarp-lined "pillow" walls resistant to washout
✨ **Created a stepped spillway** with sandbags for gentler cascading
✨ **Expanded the main sediment trap/pool** to absorb downstream flow
**The Impact:**
🔹 Slows flood peaks by 30–50% in moderate storms
🔹 Traps 50–80% of sediment upstream, protecting the main pool
🔹 Raises local water table & increases riparian moisture
🔹 Turns a destructive chute into a self-stabilizing, stepped ladder
🔹 Creates habitat for wildlife, insects & beneficial vegetation
**The Goal:**
Transform a **scoured, flash-flood canyon** into a **resilient, water-retaining ecosystem** that protects my land, enhances infiltration, and builds soil over time. 🌱
