Canoa has become the backpacker's favourite coastal destination in Ecuador the last few years. With it's large sandy beach, good surf, seaside caves and collection of chilled-out, beachy hostels, its not hard to see why! Aside from relaxing on the beach or catching the surf, there's a fair bit to see and do in the surroundings. There was a series of caves at the northern end on the beach although several collapsed in an earthquake nine years ago. There are still a couple however that you can visit at low tide to see the bats that make them their home and to check out the stalactites and rock formations. The seafood in Canoa is top class and the atmosphere fun and relaxed. For an Ecuadorian coastal destination, this is probably one of the best and if nothing else, a great place to take it easy for a few days.
