Zoom in! Can you recognize the small shiny white dots on the leaves? These are actually salt crystals! Black mangroves grow in salt or brack-water lagoons near the shore and are able to get rid of excess salt by secreting it from the pores on their leaves. If the light falls just right, you'll be able to see the leaves sparkling ✨✨✨

What creatures do you think these structures belong to?

Pencil-spined Sea Urchins!

Sometimes the centers of their bodies wash up on shore in one piece, although usually only small fragments are found.

These, as well as the sturdy purple spines that cover their bodies when they are alive are very important for the ecosystem, because they proportion a big percentage of the material that makes up our oceanic beaches - which in turn are important nesting places for turtles and marine iguanas! And of course the preferred hang-out-spots for our friendly and beloved sea lions ;)

Did you know that Galapagos is known for its' high percentage of endemic species? Endemic means unique and that they can't be found anywhere else in the world. Some species are endemic - even on a genus level! Darwins's Shrub (Darwiniothamnus tenuifolius) belongs to one of the seven endemic genera of plants that can be found on these islands.

Endemic Galapagos Blue Butterfly (Leptodes parrhasioides). Tell the genders apart - the upper surface of the wings of males is violet-blue, while females are greyer.

How about this one? We don't know! The underside of the wings is almost identical in both genders 😋

We 'lava' (love) Galapagos ❤ ! Pahoehoe lava in Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island. 'Pahoehoe' comes from the Hawaiian word for 'rope' or 'ropy'. On the pictures you can also see a little oven ('hornito'), driblet cones and lava toes. 🌋

ACTION on Punta Estrada
What might look like two marine iguanas dancing a tango at first is actually a fight!

Two large males had a fierce encounter to determine which one would get the territory...and the ladies ;)

Not included in the video: The winner was the one that managed to bite the neck of the other in the end. We found him proudly bobbing his head and walking around his new gained territory about half an hour later.
