“With the presence of 24 elite surfers in the country, among them Dominic Mimi Barona, the first edition of the Corona Open will be held on Saturday in the town of Montañita, Santa Elena Province. From 08:00 to 17:00, participants will strive to perform their best stunts on the boards in the men's, women's and aerial categories. The event will begin with the qualifying stage, in which 32 men will fight to obtain the three quotas to complete the main draw, which will consist of 16. Five judges will be in charge of qualifying the two best competitors, and the winner will be the one who accumulates the highest score. Before the men's and women's finals, six men will exhibit their extreme maneuvers in the airshow.
Regarding the competition, Mimi Barona commented: "The waves will be very good and the show is guaranteed. Through the information received by the entities in charge of the supervision of the sea, it is known that the marine currents that traveled through Hawaii are entering the coast of our country." She added, "Waves of 1.50 and more than 2 meters are expected and the tide will be perfect for Montañita to have a good show, and the truth is that we have all been training to do our best, because it is the first time that it will take place an event of this magnitude, with the best. The winners in each category will receive a prize of $1,000 and $500 for second place.”
